Spring Polish Picks

Fingers crossed, spring is actually upon us here in Canada.  I know it's a cliche to say that it's always freezing in our country, but the first three months of 2012 were no cliche!  It was overcast and miserable.
Bring on spring!
Here are my spring nail polish picks.  I didn't choose these by considering this season's trends, but rather just by what made me think of springtime.  Hope you enjoy!

Oh Canada

You can't deny the star power of Justin Bieber.  You just can't.  When he first came on the scene most of us thought he was just another one hit wonder.  He couldn't be further from that!  A YouTube sensation from Ontario, Bieber has taken the world by storm many times over.
Yesterday he dropped the first single off his upcoming album, Believe.  Boyfriend is a new, more mature sound for the 18 year old.  It actually makes me think a lot of Justin Timberlake, which is a pretty high compliment.  The range of Bieber's voice is undeniable.
Check out Boyfriend here.  I listened to it once and then immediately bought it off iTunes.
If you have the chance to watch Never Say Never his concert documentary I guarantee it will change your opinion.  I saw it in theatre and was blown away by his work ethic, personality and raw talent.  (It's on Netflix right now.)
No longer is Justin Bieber just for young girls.  He's the real deal.

100th Post

I can't believe this is my hundredth post already!  What better way to celebrate than with my review of The Hunger Games.
(Check out the trailer here.)
The movie adaptation of Suzanne Collins' novel The Hunger Games was released Friday and coincidentally we had company who were more than happy to babysit Thomas.  This is a real treat because we used to go to the movies all time.  I'd guess we would average going to the cinema once every two weeks before our lil guy was born and we miss those dates.  I digress.
We saw The Hunger Games yesterday starring Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen and Josh Hutcherson as Peeta Mellark.  (If you are unfamiliar with the plot of this story, you can read about it here.)
A couple days ago I celebrated by posting this Nail of the Day and also my review of the trilogy which I read recently.  To say it mildly, I was excited!  This movie did not disappoint.  I was crying no less than 20 minutes in!  The scene of the reaping did it to me.  Oh man was it gut-wrenching.  The running time is about two and a half hours, but it never felt like it dragged or went too long.  This says a lot because usually I get bored after 90 minutes!  The pace kept up just like Collins' books.  I was on the edge of my seat many times and I even knew what was going to happen:)  I've never been in a theatre full of people that was so quiet.  Most of the time I could hear people munching on popcorn it was so still.  It seemed everyone was gripped by the film.  Obviously the movie can't include all the details from the novel, but it did an admirable job.  I only wish Cinna was featured more because I love his character and his influence on Katniss.
Oh and my other complaint?  Having to wait until 2013 for the next in the trilogy, Catching Fire.
Did you see the movie?  What did you think?

Nail of the Day

I am thrilled to share today's Nail of the Day with you.  This is from the China Glaze Hunger Games collection.  This is Fast Track.  It's gorgeous!  I thought from the colour in the bottle it was going to be a creamy nude with subtle flecks of gold.  But it is so much more and the way it catches the light is so pretty.  One of my favourites in a while.

The collection is in honour of The Hunger Games movie which hits theatres Friday.  It's the movie adaptation of the book by Suzanne Collins.  There are 12 polishes which are supposed to represent the 12 districts in the novel.  They are pretty but not all great colours for Spring.  Fast Track on the other hand I think is going to be pretty in any season.  This was my first China Glaze polish and it really impressed me.  Essie may have competition;)

Speaking of The Hunger Games, in case you aren't familiar with it, here is my review of the trilogy.  Don't worry, no spoilers!

Tuesday Questionnaire

1.) Mood:  A little sleepy because my poor son is sick and we've been up for the past countless nights.  I just feel so bad for him:(
2.) What is your astrological sign and, if you know what it means, do you think it fits you? I am a Leo.  Yes, this suits me!  A redheaded Leo; watch out world!
3.) Did anything exciting happen over the weekend?  Well, exciting in my world:)  Thomas learned how to play peek-a-boo which is ridiculously cute.  And we tested out his passport for the first time, going across the line for the day.  Super fun!
4.) Current nail polish: Essie's Splash of Grenadine on my toes and a China Glaze on my fingers from the Hunger Games collection.  Expect a Nail of the Day later this week.  I am loving it!
5.) What is your favorite month of the year? Ordinarily I would automatically think July as it's my birth month but now I gravitate toward May.  It's both my wedding anniversary and Thomas' birthday.  Also, Mother's Day which I am super stoked about! (Are you reading this Thomas?;)
6.) Can you skateboard? Hahahah heck no!  I am so clumsy; I would never attempt it!
7.) Current outfit: Pjs (boring sorry, slow morning!)
8.) If you had one selfish wish, what would it be? That the tickets to Live With Kelly I applied for would arrive this week!  Eek!  I've been watching for 19 years and it would be such a surreal dream come true!
9.) Cargo pants: yay or nay? I think cargo capris can be cute and casual with flip flops in the summer.
10.) Weekly goals: To will this horrific "spring" weather to improve.  I cannot believe today is the official start to spring and it snowed. Snowed!  For crying out loud.

Current Faves

If you are a pop music lover like me, right now there are a lot of great new tracks being released.  There was a lull at the end of last year, but it's just been solid for a while now.  I am getting excited for some albums set to be released later this year, but we will save that for another blog post.

I know I'm not 100% up on current hits because I am off work right now, but I am doing my best to keep up on current music trends and tracks.  Getting to hear songs as soon as they are released and playing them for the first time for our listeners is one of the highlights of my job as a radio host.

These songs are among those in my "Lately" playlist in my iPod.  I keep playing them on repeat and cranking them when I got walking.  Here are my six favourites of the moment:

Good Girl  - Carrie Underwood
Starships - Nicki Minaj (explicit)
Take Care - Drake ft. Rihanna
Part of Me - Katy Perry
Curiosity - Carly Rae Jepsen

What songs are you keeping on repeat lately?

Not So Horrible

I must start out by saying I had pretty low expectations for this movie.  I think I remember last summer it getting awful reviews.  (But then again, last summer is pretty much a blur.  I have to keep reminding myself that I am actually a year older because I the first few months after Thomas was born are basically a smudge, including my birthday!)
Sometimes I find this works to my advantage.  If my expectations are super low, then I am usually pleasantly surprised.
This is definitely the case for Horrible Bosses.
It stars Jason Bateman, Charlie Day and Jason Sudeikis as three friends who all hate their bosses and in a night of drinking decide to kill them.  I know that sounds sinister and pretty awful, but if you like crude, inappropriate R-rated humour, this movie is for you.  We found ourselves laughing out loud throughout the movie.  It's a great romp following a trio of funny guys with hilarious over-the-top bosses played by Kevin Spacey, Jennifer Aniston and Colin Farrell.
I think the stand-out is Day, who I wasn't familiar with at all.  He's hilarious and carries many of the scenes.
Again, this is a pretty crude comedy.  Mum, not for you;)

St Paddy's Nail of the Day

Now that I'm an old married mama, gone are the days of celebrating St. Patrick's Day in a pub drinking horrid green beer.  This year, I paint my nails to mark the holiday and put my babe in a cute green outfit;)
Here's my St. Paddy's day inspired nails:
I used Joe Fresh Mallard, Sally Hansen Ivy League and Revlon Belle top coat.

Oh Baby, What a Road Trip

This past weekend my husband and I drove to visit his family.  They live about 400 kilometres away and it's a drive I've done countless times.  (When I was going to journalism school in the area I was driving back and forth a couple times a month.  Oh the crazy things we do when we're young!)
This was a particularly bad journey both to and from with the weather and the addition of a very unhappy baby.  On the way down I was alone in the car with Thomas and he has never liked being alone in the backseat in the dark.  He was happy for portions of the journey and very unhappy for others.
So, I thought today I would share some of my ways to calm him down while keeping an eye on the snow-covered highway:

- I had an arsenal of toys to pass back to him one by one.  New toys always seem to help.  They were just small things like teething toys, rings, Sophie, board books etc.
- I set him up with one of his favourite toys from Ikea so it was in arm's reach to play with.  It's actually another toy I recommend and looks like this:
- I sang him nursery rhymes and little songs we've learned in baby group.  I've been told that if you practice these songs with your baby in calm situations, they will associate with the songs and rhymes in stressful times to relax.  Totally worked!  Ok well it took 45 minutes of me loudly rhyming repeatedly, but he fell asleep!

On the way back Jeremy was driving and so I could be in the back with Thomas.  That was much easier as I could feed him a bottle and play with him.  Also, it was daylight;)

What do you do to calm your babe on road trips?

2.) Do you take vitamins every day? I take a pre/post-natal vitamin (Materna by Centrum)

5.) What color are the walls of your bedroom? Purple

7.) Current outfit? My new Gap skinny jeans with a white ribbed tank and black and grey cardigan.
8.) What is your favorite television program? I've talked about favourite all-time shows before so I will just go with current shows.  I really like The Big Bang Theory and Parenthood.

10.) Weekly goals:  To brainstorm a way to improve our home office area.  I'd love a space to work on this website but right now it's very uninspiring!

Thank You!!

I want to take today's post to thank you.  Yes you, reading this right now.
Hi there!
Thanks for stopping by!
This site has only been live for a little over two months but I am so excited by the thousands of hits it's getting:)  Giant smiley face!
So, in honour of all of you amazing people who decided to check it out, I wanted to post an embarrassing photo of myself.
Here I am in the first grade before I knew the importance of grooming:
Check out those uneven bangs and the tinfoil dress.  Classy right?
I hope this has provided a weekend chuckle for you.
Also, I am hoping to hear from you as I want to know what types of posts you'd like to see more of.  Please let me know if there are any topics you particularly are liking or if there's something new I should touch on.  I'd love your feedback.
Feel free to leave a comment on this post or tweet me: @redmare.

Nail of the Day

This is Essie's Glamour Purse.  I like the colour but I think the name does not suit it at all.  This colour is definitely not glamorous! It's grey in some lights, but it can also seem to be mauve or even a bit brown.  I think it will be much more suited for the fall.  This would also be a good colour to go with for a business meeting or job interview.

Tuesday Questionnaire

1.) Mood: Super excited!  I just found out that one of my favourite shows of all-time, Live With Kelly is coming to Banff and we just happen to be there at the exact same time!  Just entered a draw for tickets.  Fingers crossed!
2.) What is the closest blue object to you?  My mug of coffee.  It's pretty much always near me;)
3.) What is your favorite card game? UNO
4.) Current nail polish:  Essie's Glamour Purse on my fingers and Sally Hansen's Virtual Violet on my toes.  My nine year old niece is having a two night sleepover and I just did her nails:)  Her fingers are Nicole by OPI's Khloe Had a Little Lam Lam and her toes are alternating Sally Hansen's Virtual Violet and NYX's Asphalt
5.) Do you consider yourself to be a good dancer? Heck yes!
6.) What is the best haircut you have ever had? I think I might have to say my current cut.  I am just loving my bangs.  I also like my hair when it's shorter, above the shoulders.
7.) Current outfit: Gap skinnies and Old Navy long black tank with Nine West navy infinity scarf
8.) Do you have a fear of flying on airplanes?  I'm not a huge fan of take off or landing, but I wouldn't say I have a fear.   This summer we are taking our first family plane ride.  That's a little nerve-wracking to think about!
9.) What is the last movie you watched? The Vow
10.) Weekly goals: A whole week of zero impulse spending.  Only necessities like groceries and gas.  How boring!

So Courageous

Even though my maternity leave isn't finished for a couple months, I was asked to help emcee an event last night honouring women.  How could I say no?  It was a great opportunity to help showcase some amazing women in and around my community.  Also, it helped me remember how to emcee!
(Would you believe the dress I am wearing I found brand-new with the tags still on at a consignment store for six bucks?!?)

In preparing for the event and reading over the script I had a feeling one particular award would be a tough one.  The was the 'courage' category.  Of course this was the one part of the evening that wasn't judged.  Both recipients were amazing women overcoming unthinkable circumstances.
I had the believable honour of introducing Rita Chretien.  I am sure her name rings a bell as her story was told worldwide.  (You can read about it here
Just being in the same room as Rita was an honour but to introduce and meet her was moving.  I was definitely wiping tears away, along with the rest of the room!

Mama Mare Must Have

It will come as no surprise that I love to paint my nails. Being a new mum it would never fail that I would have a fresh coat on my fingers and my son would wake up or get hungry or just plain need me. So I started looking for a product to help speed the drying of my nails.  I knew I'd seen such things used in salons.  I landed on these drying drops by Nicole by OPI.  They instantly were a hit for me.  I even gave them as Christmas gifts to two lovely ladies.
The picture above is what you would see in a store and below is actually what the bottle looks like.
I am including this in a 'Mama Must Have' but I think it's a must-have for anyone painting their nails.  All you do is wait a minute after putting on your top coat, put a couple of drops on each nail and they dry SO fast!  It really makes such a difference.  I have already gone through an entire bottle of this because I love it so much!
The only thing I want to mention to watch for is that you don't get too confident in the drying action, only to do too much and smudge your nails.
These drying drops have quickly become a staple in my manicure routine and also will be something I continue to give as gifts.
(I have bought this at both Wal-Mart and Superstore.)
