Oh Baby, What a Road Trip

This past weekend my husband and I drove to visit his family.  They live about 400 kilometres away and it's a drive I've done countless times.  (When I was going to journalism school in the area I was driving back and forth a couple times a month.  Oh the crazy things we do when we're young!)
This was a particularly bad journey both to and from with the weather and the addition of a very unhappy baby.  On the way down I was alone in the car with Thomas and he has never liked being alone in the backseat in the dark.  He was happy for portions of the journey and very unhappy for others.
So, I thought today I would share some of my ways to calm him down while keeping an eye on the snow-covered highway:

- I had an arsenal of toys to pass back to him one by one.  New toys always seem to help.  They were just small things like teething toys, rings, Sophie, board books etc.
- I set him up with one of his favourite toys from Ikea so it was in arm's reach to play with.  It's actually another toy I recommend and looks like this:
- I sang him nursery rhymes and little songs we've learned in baby group.  I've been told that if you practice these songs with your baby in calm situations, they will associate with the songs and rhymes in stressful times to relax.  Totally worked!  Ok well it took 45 minutes of me loudly rhyming repeatedly, but he fell asleep!

On the way back Jeremy was driving and so I could be in the back with Thomas.  That was much easier as I could feed him a bottle and play with him.  Also, it was daylight;)

What do you do to calm your babe on road trips?
