One Terrible Shirt

Yesterday I shot a bunch of footage while I was on the air at work, thinking it would be super fun to show you a behind the scenes look at a radio morning show.  Turns out it's actually pretty boring;)  It's just me talking in a room to myself, hahaha!  Ah well, if you'd like to see it check out this video:  (Oh and yes, I've disposed of this shirt. I am fully aware it makes me look like I'm in my third trimester!)

Carly's Direction

My love for Carly Rae Jepsen is no secret.  In fact, a few months ago I got to see her in concert and wrote this review right before she went worldwide with her hit Call Me Maybe.  That was one of my favourite songs of 2011 and looks to be in the running for the 2012 Song of the Summer, especially in the US.  I found this mashup of Call Me Maybe and One Direction's What Makes You Beautiful.  I wanted to share because I've had it on repeat all day!
Check it out by clicking here.
What songs are you loving right now?

Review - Revlon Lip Butters

These have been out for quite a while now and I was late to the party, but nonetheless, I wanted to share my thoughts on these lil babies.  Here's my review of the Revlon ColorBurst Lip Butters:)
The Revlon website says the butters will give you soft, glowing, healthy lips.  Also, it claims 94% of women felt lips were softer, smoother and instantly hydrated.
Yes, yes, yes and heck yes!
These lip butters are supposed to be a lip balm with a hint of tint.  They are super pigmented though and make my lips so soft and hydrated.
I have these two colours:

This is Peach Parfait, a more glittery, light option with the ability to give a hint of colour or really build the pigmentation.
I have used probably half the tube already and can see myself using the entire product!  It's one of my most reached-for lip colours for the office.
This is Raspberry Pie, a colour I have worn in a couple outfit of the day videos: Patterned Leggings and Night Out
As you can see, this is a much darker colour with much less sparkle.  I apply Raspberry Pie very carefully and use hardly any product whereas Peach Parfait I can pretty much put on without a mirror.
The Revlon Lip Butters are about $6.99 I think on sale at WalMart.  They are great bang for your buck if you are looking for something to keep your lips hydrated and pigmented.  I haven't tried any other colours but will definitely be indulging!  When I first bought these two, I left WalMart with my hand looking like this because I had such a tough time narrowing it down!

Rock of Ages Review

Last night I slipped away from the house for a little girl's night with a friend and saw the movie Rock of Ages.  It stars Julianne Hough, Tom Cruise, Russell Brand, Alec Baldwin, Catherine Zeta-Jones and a host of other actors.  It's based on a super popular Broadway musical that showcases the music of the 80s.  I'm talking hair metal, hair spray and hair raising tunes.  The story is one that has been done in various forms before: girl leaves small town for the big city with big dreams of becoming a star but encounters obstacles along the way.  Regardless, I love an underdog story.  And one where the characters randomly bust out into song? Even better!
It has been a while since I've seen a musical and this one was fun because almost every song was instantly recognizable.  Well, for this child of the 80s anyway;)  There's everything from Whitesnake, Journey, Bon Jovi and countless others.
It's a bit on the cheesy side, but isn't that the beauty of a musical?   It's a bit over the top cheesy in parts.  Catherine Zeta Jones, I'm looking at you.  Russell Brand definitely provides some comic relief, as expected.  Tom Cruise as the heart-throb lead singer was actually much better than I expected.  He sure committed to being the slick, dirty, 80s star well!  I love Diego Boneta as the male lead character.  I've never heard of him before, but he's obviously going to be a star!
Rock of Ages is a fun, romp down memory lane for anyone who grew up with 80s music.

What movies have you seen lately?  I'm always looking for recommendations:)

10,000 Thank You's!

Here is a picture of me enjoying a delicious brownie Oreo earthquake ice cream whipped cream concoction a few nights ago.
This was Jer's treat for me as we celebrated my lil website receiving more than ten thousand hits!
Reaching that milestone in less than six months has surpassed any expectation I've had for Mare's Place.
Thank you!
Now that I've reached this goal, I'd like to turn the tables on you.
What would you like to see on here?  More of something? Less of something? Please leave a comment below or tweet me.
Thank you again and again.  I love my little piece of the web and have so much fun creating posts for it:)

Wise Word Wednesday

Give em hell, turn their heads
Gonna live life 'til we're dead.
Give me scars, give me pain
Then they'll say to me, say to me, say to me
There goes the fighter, there goes the fighter
If you fall pick yourself up off the floor (get up)
And when your bones can't take no more (c'mon)
Just remember what you're here for

Sneak Peek - Bieber's Believe

Sometimes I just love my job.  This weekend, I got a sneak peek at the brand new Justin Bieber album Believe.  It hits stores Tuesday and is guaranteed to be number one.  Amazing to be able to hear it before everyone else!  So, I thought I'd share my thoughts.
This is no Baby Bieber.  Although he will still mature into a full-on adult sound, Bieber has changed so much since his first two albums.  He's grown a ton musically, lyrically and just his sound in general.  His range is wide and sounds a lot like another Justin, Timberlake.
The album starts with the upbeat, feel-good All Around the World, a track that's been in my head all weekend long.  There's also As Long As You Love Me which not only shares the same title as a Backstreet Boys song, aces in my book, but is a great modern take on a love song.  Believe pays sincere homage to his Beliebers which I just love.  Bieber is joined by big names like Nicki Minaj and Drake but to be honest, I don't think he needs the help.  This Canadian stands on his own and doesn't need to be carried by anyone.  Out of 13 tracks, Bieber is listed as a songwriter on 12.  Love seeing this!  At times Believe has a similar vibe to his mentor Usher's 1997 album My Way, very R&B.
A few years ago when Taylor Swift released her second album Fearless I finally admitted I was a fan and decided I wasn't too old to like a teenage singer.  This is how I feel about Justin Bieber.  Long gone is the kid from Ontario with the side-swept haircut.  He's been replaced by an artist with real staying power whose beginning we are only witnessing.

Nail of the Day

This is my first encounter with Butter London and to be honest, unless I win the lottery,  or get a shade as a gift, it will probably be one of my last.  These bad boys retail for $17-22 in Canada and I balked at the price when I first looked at them.  But you know, nail polish obsessed, and just had to see what all the fuss is about.  I thought this colour, Aston, was going to be a gorgeous rose gold shade with flecks of yellow gold throughout as shown in the bottle.  Well you can hardly see the gold in the polish and it really was more of a muted, dull blush pink.  Now, I might have had a different opinion on Butter London in general if I'd liked the shade the better, but this is not the case.  I had to do three coats and the formulation was nothing special.  I was surprised because, I really like to think you get what you pay for.  And, so many beauty gurus on youtube rave about Butter London.  I much prefer Essie or OPI.

Review: Maybelline Color Tattoo Eyeshadow

I mentioned these in a recent haul but have had a few questions about them so I thought, why not do a review?
These are the Maybelline Color Tattoo 24 Hour Eyeshadows.  I have tried these two colours so far:

Now, I'm not sure why someone would want their eyeshadow to last 24 hours, but if one did, this would be the product for them.  The lasting power is amazing.  Mine easily lasts from when I do my makeup at 4am until I take it off at 8pm.  And it goes on so easily.  I just use my finger to sweep this cream shadow across my lid and voila!  Installed.  It's a great low-maintenance, girl-on-the-go kinda shadow.  They are ridiculously pigmented as you will see in the swatches below.  I can't imagine ever using up an entire pot.
This is Bad to the Bronze:

Here is Tough as Taupe:

As you can see, Bad to the Bronze is a beautiful copper colour with a hint of shimmer.  Not too much though, it's easily appropriate for work.  Tough as Taupe is more of a matte grey.  This is nice on its own, but I've been using it as either a base shade or an accent colour in my crease.
I think these retail for about $6.99 at WalMart.  Now you may be thinking that's a lot of one colour but it's worth it.  I love these products and find myself reaching for them many times a week.  I've heard from people much fancier than me that they are a great dupe for the Mac paint pots, which retail for a lot more!
Have you tried these?  Will you?

MareReads: 50 Shades of Grey

I finally succumbed to the hype and read 50 Shades of Grey.  I have no idea how to write this review and not make it rated R.  Restricted with a capital R.  I feel like it should come with a warning and you should almost have to show I.D. before buying it!  It's always front and centre in the book store and I wonder how many teens are picking it up thinking it's like Twilight or The Hunger Games series.
Heck no.
It's the story of a student who falls for a very successful businessman.  Hmmm what else can I tell you? They have quite the erotic romp, to put it very mildly.
Ok, let's get serious.  This book is basically lady-porn.  I said it.  It's light on plot, character development and story, yet heavy on the steam.  I thought the book was going to focus more on the relationship between the two main characters but it's more adult-movie-esque in that it there's not a lot of substance between sex scenes.
That being said, it's entertaining!  Almost every woman I've asked about this book raves about it and says they couldn't put down the trilogy.  If you want to read it, expect a lot steam and not a lot of substance.  Coming from a chick-lit lover, that's ok;)
And expect to make this face if you have to bring it in to work to discuss it:

I May Have A Problem...

Candles are one of the least expensive, most calming things in my house.  I just love lighting a candle.  For some reason just having a lit candle in the room instantly brings my stress right down and creates a calm in the room.  That being said, I maaaaay have a small, teeny tiny, addiction to Slatkin & Co. three wick candles from Bath and Body Works.  Just a small addiction.  Ahem.
These are hands-down the best candles I've ever purchased.  The smell is so fragrant and pretty that it fills my house just the right amount.  Not over-powering or sickly-sweet.  Even without lighting the wicks the smell is beautiful.
They are made using the highest concentration of fragrance oils, an exclusive blend of vegetable wax and lead-free wicks for optimal performance.  Bath and Body Works boasts they burn for up to 40 hours and although I've never timed it, they do seem to be everlasting.  I will say, the $22.50 price tag is ridiculous for a candle, BUT I have never paid that much for one of these.  There's always a 2 for $30 sale or 2 for $25 and often I have found coupons for an additional savings.  I think they are worth every penny.  These two are the how my collection/addiction started.

Island Colada: A delicious blend of pineapple, creamy coconut and orange, with a touch of ginger.
Bahama Fizz: A refreshing concoction of island pineapple, banana and fresh kiwi, infused with spiced rum and coconut.
I wanted to show you just how evenly these candles burn.  I've never seen something so flat and perfect after burning.  No more dollar store candles for me!
I also love Passion Flower: Juicy passion fruit, watery pear and casaba melon combine perfectly with Tahitian vanilla.  (It's the candle I have burning on my desk while I film and edit videos.)
Wild Strawberry: Fragranced with strawberry blended perfectly with wild honeysuckle and orange flower.
I am burning Lilac Blossom on our main floor now and just love it: A delightful fragrance blending lilac blossom, lingering muguet, delicate heliotrope and violets.

I plan to use Frosted Cupcake to create the illusion that I bake;) It's described as: A treat after a day at the market, a delicious vanilla-bean cupcake and rich buttercream frosting with a dusting of sugar.
I've only purchased one candle holder so far, this zebra print:
I do like the candle holders but I think the glass containers the candles are in are pretty enough on their own.

Choking Warning

This is one of T's favourite toys.  It's provided hours of entertainment both in the car and at home.  It makes sounds like a motorcycle, lights up and plays music too.  We absolutely love this toy and it's definitely been in T's top three faves for the past three months.  However, I had a bit of a terrifying event this past weekend involving this toy so I thought I would share as a cautionary tale.
T and I were driving along and he was playing with his Harley toy as he usually does.  Then I started to hear him make some gagging sounds.  I looked back and he had his fingers in his mouth.  This is pretty normal as he's teething like crazy.  The gagging stopped and he seemed fine.  It started and stopped a few times.  I'd look back and he would be smiling away and looking out the window at the passing traffic.  But my mama instinct kicked in and I just knew something was wrong.  So I made a snap decision to quickly make a left off the highway on to a small pull-out to just check on him.  I parked, ran around the van and ripped the door open.  He was still gagging a bit so I put my fingers in his mouth and fished around.  (This is not the first time I've had to fish something out of his tightly closed mouth!)  I felt nothing.  I inspected this toy thoroughly and saw nothing missing.  Then he started to gag again,  so I put my fingers down the back of this tongue and fished out a teeny tiny piece of plastic.  It looked like saran wrap and had been the cover on the little mirror you can see on the toy in the above picture.  He'd been working for months to peel it off and had finally eaten it.  It was maybe an inch or two square.  SO SCARY!  This has happened to me and my friends with babes before with things like pieces of shag carpet, a piece of leaf, and the top off an individual yogurt.  They eat anything and do it so quickly!  The small, flat items just get wet with saliva and the babes can't swallow nor cough it up.  Just a warning, inspect your toys!  It's unrealistic to say we should be watching our babes at all times, especially when driving and T needs something to occupy him.  So, let this terrifying incident be a warning:)

Nail of the Day

This is an OPI colour that I was instantly drawn to.  It's called Be a Dahlia Won't You?  This is the first shade that I can remember taking off and instantly wanting to repaint.  That never happens!  I get so bored with a colour that I usually change it every four or so days.  Even if it's a purple, I would never change my nails to a different shade of purple.  I like to mix it up.  But, this beautiful polish has me hooked!  It's a deep pink with gold and orange shimmer.  Super pretty!  I found it on sale at my hair salon, a great place to look for polishes.  Now, I am not sure how to rate its longevity as I now credit my base and top coats with lasting power.  Regardless, this colour is gorgeous for summer and I will definitely be wearing it a lot!  (Can you tell I'm on a pink kick? My next NOTD is also pink.  I love it for summer!)

Bows 'n Boots

These are the boots I am sporting today.  I featured them in a haul a while back after I found them in an end of season sale at WalMart.  They were THREE DOLLARS!! I just love these booties, especially the small heel and bow detailing.  They feel a bit saucy;)   I am a little sad to be wearing them in the rain in June, but when the weather gets you down, fashion brings you back up!  Wait, I should copyright that.
What do you wear in the rain?  What's the best deal you've found?  My favourite word is 'clearance' and I love hints on where to find deals:)

Here's a clip from my radio show this morning with my co-host and I talking about these boots:

Sally Hansen Extreme Wear in Twisted Pink.  The picture doesn't show it but there is a bit of gold shimmer in this polish.  As usual, I rave about the wear:) It's a great bright pink for spring and summer.
