How to Survive Halloween Candy

Halloween has to be one of the toughest times to avoid sweets, along with Christmas of course.  There are so many delicious treats circling my office and also just whenever I am out, people seem to be in the candy-filled spirit!  If you are like me and trying to eat well, I thought I would share some tips to avoid binging on sugar this Halloween:

Buy your trick-or-treater candy the day of:  This way, you won't be tempted to eat candy leading up to the 31st and you can get it out of your house just as quickly as it came in.

Keep it closed:  If you have to buy your goodies ahead of time, don't open the box and think, "oh I will just have one".  Yeah right.  If you are like me, one turns into 27.  Keep it closed and out of sight.

Buy non-faves:  Think of candy you don't really like and get that stuff.  Hate sour stuff?  Buy it.  Allergic to peanuts? Buy it.  That way you won't be tempted to nosh on candy you don't like/can't eat.

Avoid sales:  Yes, Halloween candy goes on ridiculous sales on November 1st.  But, just because it's 75% off, doesn't mean you have to have it.  Resist.  Buy a nail polish instead;)

Let yourself have fun:  Obviously you don't want to completely avoid candy for Halloween.  That's no fun.  Also, I think if you don't allow yourself some, you might go overboard and indulge later.  I checked into it, and some of the lower calorie or lower point candies are:  Jolly Ranchers, licorice, Tootsie Rolls and Skittles.  All in moderation of course:)

I hope this helps!  Oh and for those of you who watched my I Heart Fall Tag video and wanted to see our rocker family costume, voila:

T Bone and The Parent$.  ROCK ON!! :)

Adding Up My Face

Happy Monday!  Here is a fun tag I did recently.  In case you don't know, a tag is a themed video on YouTube that someone creates and then 'tags' other YouTubers to film their own versions.  Adding up how much my face costs was a unique idea I'd never thought of, but was fun to do.
Hope you enjoy!
Also, don't forget, my GLOSSYBOX giveaway ends today at 5pm PST!

Favourite Music Videos

My husband actually came to me with this idea to post our favourite music videos on here.  Jeremy and I are massive music fans.  Even saying that just doesn't seem to cut it!  We both work in radio and when we aren't working, we are still talking about, reading up on and listening to, music.  As you will notice, we do have very different tastes with a bit of cross-over.
Coming up with a list of our top five favourite music videos of all time proved to be much more difficult than I expected!  (Yes, we take these things very seriously!)  In fact, it ended up being our Top 6!  These are by no means our favourite songs of all-time, just the videos we like the best!  I hope you find this list fun and something fun to click on during this lazy Sunday:)

Nail of the Day

I am disappointed how this colour photographs.  It's Sally Hansen's Plum's The Word and it really is a nice deep purple colour, not the brown-ish tinge it's showing on camera.  This polish has a huge brush, making it super fast and easy to paint my nails.  Although if you have small nails, you might not like it. The lasting power has been great.  I've had it on for six days now.  I think it's beautiful for fall, subtle yet very pretty.  It's been a colour that I stare at often:)  Again I am impressed with Sally Hansen.

Wise Word Wednesday

This week's quote is particularly timely for me.  I've been making a conscious effort for a while now to not engage in gossip or bad-mouthing anyone behind their back.  It's been interesting to see how people react when I won't join in on their conversation making fun of someone.  Usually they are less than impressed with my blank stare.  Sometimes I will flatly call them out on being jerks and other times I just quietly sit back.  Friends and co-workers seem put-off that I won't contribute in idle gossip.
I always think to myself, "I would hate to find out that someone was talking like this about me".  Coincidentally last week I found out someone has been talking trash about me behind my back.  At first I was annoyed and wanted to confront them.  Then I realized their comments were spawned by jealousy and I decided to move on.  I work hard with my head down and don't brag about my achievements, and this person was wanting a piece of that pie.
I'm not saying I've never gossiped, because we all have.  I just try to be aware of it now and choose to avoid the drama.

I'm So Random

This is another tag that is making the rounds right now on YouTube and I thought it would be fun to do.  It's a good way to get to know me, which seemed fitting as this is my 100th video posted to my YouTube channel!  It is a bit staggering to think that I've filmed, edited and uploaded that many videos in such a short period.  Clearly this is my new hobby;)
Enjoy and thanks for watching!

Review - Taylor Swift's RED

Today's review is of the highly-anticipated album from Taylor Swift, simply called RED.  (Could there be a better colour to title an album after?)  I was lucky enough to get a sneaky copy of this album a few days before it was released today and have been listening to it non-stop.  Let me start off by saying this is not a country album.  I mean I am sure that she will be supported in the country music industry, but this is reminiscent of Shania Twain gravitating from country to pop music.  Also, speaking of Canadians singers, RED has a hint of Alanis Morissette's Jagged Little Pill, in that Taylor has definitely had her heart broken and she's singing her revenge.  This is Taylor's fourth studio album and although it is filled with 16 well-written, heartfelt songs just like her previous trio, it does sound different.  I like that Taylor evolves and tries new things.  For example, listen to the track I Knew You Were Trouble.  The chorus comes out of nowhere and has a hint of dubstep.  Yeah, dubstep.  I love the song All Too Well which she says was the toughest to write.  Taylor had to deal with high expectations from her fans and critics and RED does not disappoint.  In some ways it just meets expectations, but other songs far exceed.
I wonder what a Taylor Swift album will sound like when she's settled down and in love?  Right now, she's obviously falling hard, getting burned and living to tell the tale.

Nail of the Day

Here's a pretty teal colour from OPI that I've been wearing this week.  It's called Earth Chattering Teal and is another limited edition colour for Chatters which I picked up the last time I got my hair done.  It's beautiful, deep, rich colour is bright and long-lasting.  Although I think I will be putting this one away until spring or summer.  It doesn't really scream fall to me!

Out With Summer, In With Winter

It's been unseasonably warm in my area and so I only just this week switched out my summer clothes for my fall and winter ones.  I like to do a swap twice a year.  I even put my flip-flops and sandals away  to make room for my boots.  I like to use a shopping bag and store it in my closet out of sight.
Speaking of boots, I finally let go and threw out this pair of black tall boots that have been my faithful companion for three years.  They were ripped and leaked water but they were the most flattering boot I'd seen in a long time.  I have been trying to replace them for a few seasons but never found anything good enough. (Until I found the ones you saw in my last OOTD.)
A good rule of thumb when doing this is to make a pile to donate at the same time.  If I didn't wear it all season, it goes.  I got sick of transferring clothes from storage to only put them back in the box months later.  If I didn't wear it, chances are I won't again.  I do not like having things wasting away in boxes, cluttering up my space.  I'd rather someone else have the chance to enjoy it.  Plus, it's an excuse to go shopping;)
I like to store my out of season clothes in shallow tubs that fit under our bed and spare bed.  Then they are out of sight yet accessible.   I just found these tubs at Wal- Mart.  I also like that they are see-through so I can see what is in there.
Another tip which some of you may find weird, is to check for 'free' things.  I don't know if it's like this everywhere, but in my town people have started to leave things on their lawn with a free sign.  I know people who have found beautiful desks, bed frames, tables and all kinds of things.  The rack in the picture below is something I also found for free.  I love it!  I like to have some of my current or favourite shoes out on display.  I also found a glider and stool set for free on Facebook when I was pregnant.  Can't go wrong after a little disinfectant;)
I hope some of these tips help you.  Do you swap out your clothes depending on the season?  I want to do a closet tour, but I am actually negotiating a closet make-over right now.  If it gets approved, I will bring you along for the ride.
Another great place to find ideas and tips for organization is Pinterest.  Find me on Pinterest.  I am currently obsessed!

OOTD - The Dress Fits

I shot this Outfit of the Day yesterday to show you what I wore to work:)  I was excited because I got to wear this dress from H&M that I haven't been able to wear for six years.  Holla!  I am starting to think that it's more important how I feel and how clothes fit than a number on a scale.

Turkey Leftovers Recipe

Good morning!  Canadian Thanksgiving was last weekend and I don't know about you, but we still have turkey leftovers!  I thought I would share a recipe for leftovers.  You could also substitute the turkey for chicken and make this any time of year, whether you have food to use up or not.  It's very easy and quick.  I made it last night in about 20 minutes.  It's something my mum used to make when I was little and it's just so delish!  Even my husband liked it and he's usually hard to please with new dishes, especially ones with cheese;)

Cheesy Turkey Rotini

3.5 cups of uncooked rotini
2 cups frozen veggies
1 garlic clove
1 can cream of mushroom soup
3/4 cup milk
pepper to taste
2 cups diced turkey

Cook rotini and drain.  Saute garlic and veggies on medium heat for a couple minutes.  Stir in soup and milk.  Add cheese and pepper, heat until cheese melts.  Stir in turkey and drained rotini, heat through.
Makes 4 servings.

I hope you enjoy!  I just love warm, comfort food-type dishes when the weather is changing.

Nail of the Day

I like to think this is a pretty homage to Fall today on my nails:)  It reminds me of candles burning, leaves falling and the colours changing.
This is a combo of my favourite nude of all time: Essie's Broach the Subject and Sinful Colors' Pumpkin Spice.  The nude I wore for probably five days before adding the sparkle three days ago.  Zero chipping on either colour, just a little wear and growth.

What I Bought For Groceries

Happy Friday!  Why does a short work week always feel so long?  :)

This week was a crazy busy one for us, but I wanted to share with you a little groceries haul.  This goes with my "My Way to a Healthy Life" series here on my website and also my YouTube channel.  It is a bit smaller than a normal week because it was Jeremy's birthday yesterday.  (I made him his favourite meal, this awful Swedish dish called 'palt' and then we are going out a couple times this weekend, so we didn't need groceries for those meals.)
I used to dread doing our weekly grocery shopping trip because it just seems like spending a lot of money to prepare to do a lot of work all week.  Also, it takes us a long time to get it done because I insist going to four different stores to get the best deals.  Gotta do whatcha gotta do;)

But, now I look forward to a family outing.  I look forward to trying a new recipe.  I look forward to making good, healthy choices.

So, that being said, here is the link to my Grocery Haul

Enjoy and TGIF!

Catch My Breath

I've never done a post like this, but I just have to share with you this amazing new song that's just been released.  I got to debut it on my show yesterday morning and I have been playing it non-stop since!  (In my house, not on my show;)

It's Kelly Clarkson's new song Catch My Breath.  Listen to it here.

It's so uplifting and fun and freeing.  Here are some of my favourite lyrics:

Addicted to the love I found
Heavy heart, now a weightless cloud
Making time for the ones that count
I'll spend the rest of my time
Laughing hard with the windows down
Leaving footprints all over town
Keeping faith kinda comes around
I will spent the rest of my life

Catching my breath, letting it go, turning my cheek for the sake of this show
Now that you know, this is my life, I won't be told what's supposed to be right

Catch my breath, no one can hold me back, I ain't got time for that
Catch my breath, won't let them get me down, it's all so simple now

I love some good arm candy:)
This one is comprised of a beaded bracelet my 10 year old niece made me, my Pandora charm bracelet, a silver heart bracelet I've had for probably a decade, silver bangles that were my sister's and coloured bangles from my girlfriend's stagette this summer.  Not only am I loving the stacking bracelets trend, but with this mix I look down and have so much to think of, and smile about.

I'm Thankful For...

Tomorrow is Canadian Thanksgiving, so Happy Thanksgiving to anyone who is celebrating this weekend:)  I thought it would be a good opportunity to do another post about taking the time to really appreciate the little things in life.  I did one recently and so many of you gave me fabulous feedback.  I think it's a good habit to stop and really notice all the good in your life.  Some of you may think this cheesy  I am seeing such negativity on different social media sites lately and also just in my day-to-day encounters with people.  It's to the point that I am blocking a lot of updates from people because I just don't want all those bad vibes.
Let's change that, shall we?

Even if you aren't celebrating Thanksgiving this weekend, what are you thankful for?  Here are a few things off the top of my head:

* Sunny weather recently that I've been enjoying on walks with T
*  The rapid changes in T, amazing me daily
* The support and love from Jer, the one constant in my life
* Pumpkin Spice Lattes
* A future girls trip to Seattle for Black Friday
* A job which allows me to be home with T for the majority of the day
* Bath and Body Works 3 Wick Candles
* NYX lipgloss in Tea Rose
* Comments and support from subscribers on YouTube, Twitter and on this Website

What are you thankful for?

September Glymm Box

I realize I am posting this well into October, but nonetheless, I wanted to show you what was in my September Glymm box.  If you haven't heard of Glymm before, I explained this service in my August post.
This is what was included in my September box:

Dulces en Fuego Villainess body cream.  I love the consistency of this product and it made my hands so soft and moisturized without feeling greasy.  But the smell was too powerful and I didn't like it all.
I am sure that this luxury organic haircare is lovely.  But, I'm not sure why it was sent to me, because in the survey I filled out for Glymm, I was clear that my hair is oily.  I could never use a moisture shampoo/conditioner.
I love a good makeup remover wipe.  These La Fresh ones were great on my sensitive skin and took off my makeup easily.  But, it left a slimy residue on my face afterwards.

I was also sent a Bentaberry face moisturizer, the same one that was in my box last month.  It's a nice product, but I was disappointed to get a duplicate.

As you can see from the pictures, the items came in an off-white makeup bag.  While the one in last month's box is great and now houses my nail-painting tools, this month's had a broken zipper.

I am always so excited to get my Glymm monthly package in the mail and this was such a thoughtful gift from my friend.  I just wish the products would 'wow' me!  On the website they show much more thrilling items, so, fingers crossed for next month:)

Do you subscribe to a beauty box service?  Friends of mine get GlossyBox and TopBox.  Next month, would you like a three-way comparison?

Nail of the Day

I am all about trying a new brand of nail polish.  I think so often brands are overlooked for the typical popular ones.  This is totally the case with Sinful Colors.  I'd never heard of this line of polish before my friend brought me back a couple shades from the US.  She found Sinful Colors in Target and then in London Drugs in Canada.  The formulation is really great and only needs one coat.  This particular shade is Exotic Green.  I wore it for five days without chipping.  They just came out with some pretty fall shades which I will feature soon:)
Do you like any less-well-known brands of polish I should try?
