My Goals for 2014

Good morning!  As I talked about in yesterday's blog post, I like to make goals and I like to tell people about them so I am accountable.

So, here are my New Year's Resolutions for 2014:

Wow, ok, even just typing that seemed a bit overwhelming.  Another tip to add to yesterday's...don't call them "New Year's Resolutions".  That title in itself carries a bit of doom with it doesn't it?

How about instead, we just call them 2014 Goals.  Not so staggering, right? :)

Here we go, in no particular order:

*Better, regular, communication with friends and family*

*Better housekeeping*

*Better social media*

*All things Thomas*

You may find this list a bit vague, but I will be creating plans of action for each goal and recommend you do the same with your goals.

Speaking of which, what are YOUR goals for 2014?

Tips for New Years Resolutions

Usually around this time of year I am itching to make new goals for what lies ahead.  I like to reflect on the year that was and look to what's coming.  I know there is controversy over New Year's Resolutions, but I think it's always positive to set attainable goals and I love to do it!

First, to look back on 2013.  My 2013's New Year's Resolutions were four parts, and even though at some points in the year they weren't the easiest goals to keep, I can confidently say, I rocked them! Well, "to slow down" continues to be a work in progress ;)

If you are looking to set New Years Resolutions, I have a few tips.

- set attainable, specific goals
- make a plan on how you can achieve those goals
- check in on yourself, maybe on the same day every month
- don't be too hard on yourself, as you never know what 2014 may bring
- tell people your goals to give yourself accountability

Tomorrow I will be posting my goals for this year!

Like a child, I insist on watching this movie every year. Hands down, Muppets Christmas Carol is my favourite holiday movie!

My Favourite Songs of 2013

I hope you enjoyed my Top Ten Albums of 2013 and thanks to everyone who told me their faves.  I have some new music to check out!
Today, I wanted to share with you my favourite songs of the past year.  I also did this last year and had less than ten.  But, somehow my 2013 list started out as almost 40!
Here are my Top Ten Songs of 2013:

What were some of YOUR favourite songs of 2013?  Like I said, I could have included many more!  2013 was a fabulous year for pop music.  There was a lot of innovation and originality.  Also, lots of songs that encourage people to be themselves and to accept others.  That is a trend I can get behind.

I absolutely LOVE the PopDanthology remixes that come out every year at this time. Serious GENIUS! I have no idea how he mashes the songs and videos to sound so flawless!

Kindness

Like I said in a previous post it can get stressful this time of year.  So, here are some examples of beautiful humanity and random acts of kindness.   This just warms my heart.  And makes me cry.  I am such a sap!

This little boy's parents got tattoos of insulin pumps so he wouldn't feel different.

My Top Albums of 2013

Just as I did last year, I want to talk about my favourites of 2013.  I am going to talk music, beauty, movies, tv, fashion and lots more!
As you can see, I am kicking it off with a BOOM!
Here are my Top Ten Albums of 2013
(click each album for a full review)

1 - Red - Taylor Swift
5 - Bangerz - Miley Cyrus
6 - ARTPOP - Lady Gaga
To be noted, last year I only chose ONE album and that was Taylor Swift's Red.  You will see that it is number one again this year.  Enough said.
Also, you will see only Miley and Gaga don't have reviews yet.  But expect those very soon!
What were YOUR favourite albums of 2013?

Keep Calm and Merry On

Who says Christmas is stressful?  Look at this guy, maxing and relaxing, oblivious to the hustle and bustle of the holidays!
If you aren't two like Thomas, you are probably feeling that December stress.  There is just so much to do from shopping, planning, wrapping and baking.  Then there's parties to attend, movies to watch and songs to sing.  It's not like all the things we do this time of year are terrible, it just can be tough to fit everything in.  Oh and your usual work, errands and appointments.
And also enjoy it!
This year it has taken me a bit longer to really get into the Christmas spirit.  Usually I am itching to decorate and bust out my 'NSync Christmas album.  This year we've been busy and preoccupied so I've had weeks of rushing to catch up.  I know I am not alone in feeling this way. I LOVE the holiday season; why does it have to be stressful?
I was panicking last week when Jer just stopped me and said, "it doesn't matter".  It doesn't matter if you don't bake or clean the house or put up the lights outside or wrap the presents with flair.  What does matter is that you take care of yourself and your family and slow down.  Delete the menial tasks and clear time for relaxing, movie watching and visiting.  I have cut back this year, expectations lowered and plans changed.  I am making time for those who reciprocate and who've been present in our lives this year. Time to indulge in some festive cheer!
I hope you can also remove some of your stress this week by being nicer to yourself and trying to relax.  I will be doing the same thing:)

Review: Britney Jean

I was joking with my husband Jeremy that Britney could release an album of herself singing the alphabet and I would still love it.  But I will be a little less biased, and let you know what I think of her latest album: Britney Jean.
Ok, I love it.  Even though I am a massive Britney fan and have been ever since her first song was released, with that fandom comes high expectations.  I expect Britney to be better and evolve with every album.  I know, it's a bit much to ask for!
But, Britney Jean does not disappoint!  She sounds more mature and seasoned, taking risks with lyrics and beats.  Her voice sounds rich and like she's been working on her vocals.  There are writing credits on Britney Jean and she's been quoted as saying this is her most personal record yet.  I love that!  It must be incredibly nerve-wracking to put yourself out there.  I especially love Tik Tik Boom, Perfume, Alien and of course, Work B*tch.
She's a seasoned vetran of the music industry but instead of playing it safe and sticking with what is proven successful, she continues to push the envelope and blaze her own trail.
Yes, it gets a thumbs up from me!

Nail of the Day

Today's Nail of the Day is a beautiful and festive colour: Deborah Lippman's Laughin' To The Bank.  I usually don't splurge on high-end nail polish, but this one caught my eye in Sephora and was unlike any green I own.  I think it's rich and eye-catching without being too bright or sparkly.  This is two coats but you definitely could get away with one easy swipe.  I have had it on for about five days now and it only chipped last night.  Fabulous staying power considering my nail condition! What colours do you like to paint your nails during the holidays?

Pics Lately

In case you aren't following me on Instagram, Twitter or Facebook, or watching Vlogmas, I thought I would share some of my recent photos.  I love doing these round-ups!
This is what I am currently wearing and will post a NOTD very soon.  Also, still my absolute favourite top coat, Essie's Good to Go.
My favourite Christmas treat is easily mince tarts.
This four dollar fuzzy headband from Forever 21 is going to get a work out this winter!
Our office Christmas party was a lot of fun.  I even managed to continue with the Wardrobe Challenge by borrowing a dress from a friend.  The necklace is Joe Fresh.
Emilie and I had fun trying to find a dupe for Pantone's colour of 2014: Radiant Orchid.  We settled on Maybelline's Iced Queen.
Seriously had SO much fun with Emilie last week. I wish we could hang out all the time:)
 Man I love BC.
 Hi Santa...hint hint.
Sad sight: my last Joy Tea bag.
Let it snow let it snow let it snow.

Nail of the Day

Today's Nail of the Day is one that I have worn countless times yet keep forgetting to post it on here!  This is the fanciest nail polish I own by far!  This is Chanel's Taboo.  As you can see from the photos the polish doesn't quite match the colour in the bottle.  This usually annoys me, but this polish is just beautiful!  I love the application and the staying power.  It is very hard to chip!  My only complaint is that it's a bit messy to remove as the polish is so pigmented.  But, I love this splurge and think it would make a beautiful Christmas present.

November Favourites

Hello! In case you haven't been keeping up with Vlogmas, I have been away and enjoying some much-needed family time.  But, back at it this morning and I realized I didn't ever post my November Favourites video.  Here are some of the fabulous things that I loved last month:

Welcome to Vlogmas 2013!

It's December and you know what that means...VLOGMAS!! I had so much fun vlogging every day in December last year that I decided to do it again.  I just love the daily interaction with you and the challenge of filming, editing and uploading every day.  It's also so fun to look back and see a month in our family's life, especially Thomas.  During last year's Vlogmas T took his first steps.  I mean, nothing is better than being able to reminisce and also show him the videos in the future.

Just like last year, I will be posting a video daily on my YouTube channel, but I won't be copying them all on to this site.  I still like to blog and don't want it to take over the feed on here.  So, if you want to make sure you never miss a video, please subscribe to my channel

Here's the introduction to this year's Vlogmas:

And, here is Day 1, the video I just posted this morning!

Starting Small, Couldn't Be Happier

I have never stuck with a work-out this long.
Ever.
Today marks six months of going to 30 Minute Hit multiple times a week.

It may look like minimal progress, but to me, it's huge.  I also had the opportunity to try CoolSculpting which has been another great step for me.  The first time I did the circuit at 30 Minute Hit I actually thought I was going to be sick.  Now, I leave with a huge smile and actual look forward to returning.  My energy has improved.  My stress feels much more manageable.  My eating habits aren't even close to perfect, but I have made small changes that feel like large milestones in my world.  I am ready to kick it up a notch, now that I have surpassed this incredible milestone.
I feel like starting at 30 Minute Hit was a catalyst that helps me make baby steps on My Way to a Healthy Life

Say Something

I have been enjoying some slower, more melancholy songs lately and wanted to share them with you.
It's good to have a 'chill out' playlist mixed in for those days when you need to do just that.
Here are the four I've had on repeat this week:

As my wise, music-loving niece would say:

Nail of the Day

This Nail of the Day is a new one for me.  I have never tried this kind of top coat before and really like the finish.  This is Sally Hansen's Fuzzy Coat in All Yarned Up.  I have gotten quite a few compliments on this effect and really like it.  I have put it over my last Nail of the Day.
It's textured and went on very easily.  This was only one coat.  I am not sure if I would use this on its own, but I like it over another polish.  This is a super easy way to make your polish last longer.  Once you are tired of an opaque colour, paint a textured top coat over it! Voila!

AMA Fashion

Now, you know I love an award show.  So much so, that I only got five hours of sleep last night!  #hardcore
The American Music Awards were last night and they are one of my favourites!  The fashion is always fierce, the performers bring their A gam on stage and it's not taken all that seriously. A few stand out performances in my mind were Jennifer Lopez, One Direction and Christina Aguilera with A Great Big World.

Now, when it comes to fashion, stunning!

I love Katy Perry's red carpet dress; it's classic and fits her beautifully yet has that hint of quirk we love from her.
Taylor = legs for days, bombshell.
I actually like Gaga's look, even if she came in on a weird horse!
And Miley, she's toned down yet still a show-stopper.
I have no idea what Jennifer Hudson said when she came on stage last night because I was just yelling at the tv: "Wow! Fierce! Damn! Hot!"
Ciara usually goes a little over the top but this chic bob and minimal makeup pairs perfectly with this detailed gown.
And Naya Rivera...BAM! Stunner.
When it comes to the guys, I was surprised.  Not only did I think One Direction had one of the most heartfelt performances of the night, they looked so put together and mature.  Although one of them could have used a hairbrush;)
And, is there anything Justin Timberlake DOESN'T excel at?!?!  This black and navy tux made him the best dressed man.  Easily.

3 Easy Black Bean Wrap Recipes

About two or three times a week I like to make vegetarian meals for dinner.  Some of my friends have shown an interest in doing the same, so I thought I would share three easy ways to make black bean wraps.  These are very simple, inexpensive and filling.  Thanks to everyone who requested this video in my last Grocery Haul also!
Enjoy:)

Nail of the Day

This Nail of the Day is another win from Avon.  It's Royal Vendetta in Gel Finish.  It's a 7 in 1 nail polish which I have also detailed in another Nail of the Day.  I love this polish! It's perfect if you don't have a lot of time to mess around with a base and top coat.  It was easy to apply and hasn't chipped after a few days.  I think I will be picking up some more of these Gel Finish polishes!

Mmmm Delicious!

I have been experimenting lately to find healthy alternatives to some of my favourite foods.  I am a snacker.  I would rather have little meals throughout the day than a few large ones.  That being said, the snacks I like to reach for are sometimes not the best.  So, I thought I would share some of my newest faves!
This is Sally's Cereals Chai Spiced hot oatmeal.  I found it at WalMart for $2.89.  What?!? I like that I can recognize all the ingredients, for one thing.  Also, it's filling and yummy; it's the perfect hot breakfast for these cold mornings.  Also, it's easy and convenient, coming in individual packages.  I have it at work every morning.
These are Terra Sweets and Beets chips.  Again, I can recognize all the ingredients and there are just a few.  They are a pricey alternative to chips, costing close to $5 a bag.  They are tasty though and not nearly as salty.  I tried the Mediterranean ones as well and wasn't a fan.
Can you believe it's been ten days since I had a cup of coffee? Me!?!? What?!? I just needed to cut back on the caffeine and although I am not cutting it out completely, I am impressed how good I feel.  I have been loving Earl Grey and Joy teas a lot.  As a treat, I get the tea lattes from Starbucks with non fat milk and sugar free vanilla. Yum!
This Humm! hummus is seriously delicious.  It has roasted pine nuts as a yummy garnish.  I think this was about $2.89 at WalMart.  I like to dip veggies or crackers in it and also as a sandwich or wrap spread.
And finally, just beans in general.  I am slowly cutting down the amount of meat I eat and have been substituting with all kinds of beans.  At first we didn't think it would be as filling but I find them more satisfying! You can buy them dried and cook them, but I choose the cans for about 80 cents a pop and just rinse them really well under cold water before using.

Nail of the Day

I am very behind the trend on this one, but this is the first time I have tried a liquid sand nail polish.  This Nail of the Day is Magazine Cover Mouse from the OPI Couture De Minnie Mouse collection. I am so happy my friend Loni gave this to me because it's something I never would have reached for myself.  I had only heard negative reviews on liquid sand in general and it scared me a bit.  But, I love it!  This is two coats, without a top coat.  I like how it's matte, yet it's got a bit of shimmer with the gold in the red.  I could have easily just applied one coat; it was very opaque.  The main complaint I had heard about this formula was that it would instantly chip, but I haven't had a single chip after a few days.  I think this is going to be gorgeous for a holiday party or to wear around Christmas.
Do you like liquid sand? Do you have any other colours you recommend I try?

Tuesday Questionnaire

Well, today wraps up this long questions tag I found here on YouTube and have been working my way through for the past few weeks.  You can find the rest of the posts here as well:)

1:Ever won a spelling bee? Hmmm I don't think so.  But I do appreciate good spelling and take pride in the way I write.  Nothing can turn me off reading a blog or news story or something faster than a spelling mistake or misuse of grammar.
2:Have you ever cried because you were so happy? All the time! I am such a crier!  I cry when I am happy, when I am reflecting, when I am sad, tired, overwhelmed...you name it, and I am probably crying:)
3:Own any record albums? Yes!  Jeremy definitely has more than I do.  Something that he's done in our tv room is frame some of his favourite which I think has a cool effect:

4:Own a record player? Sure do. Here it is:

5:Regularly burn incense? Never, but it's rare for me not to have a candle burning.
6:Ever been in love? Of course:)
7:Who would you like to see in concert? Adele, Pink, Katy Perry, Lorde, Britney (again), Miranda Lambert...and on and on....
8:What was the last concert you saw? Justin Timberlake and Jay Z. Amazing!!
9:Hot tea or cold tea? Both, depending on my mood, the weather, etc.
10:Tea or coffee? Well, I LOVE coffee, that goes without saying.  When I was pregnant I didn't miss alcohol, but man did I miss coffee!  But, I am trying to drink more tea.  Do you have any fun teas to suggest? Especially different fancy tea drinks at Starbucks?

Thanks for following me along in this series of questions.  It's been a lot of fun!

More Than Just a Poppy

Today is Remembrance Day in Canada.  I like to pause, reflect and honour the men and women who served in terrible conditions.  These amazing people literally fought others for our freedom.  It's a freedom we all take for granted so easily.  Both my grandparents were veterans and I loved them dearly.  Today I am taking a moment of silence to thank those we have lost and those who are fighting right now for more freedom.
Lest We Forget.
