Tuesday Questionnaire

1.) Mood: Pretty great! It's been warm enough lately that I have regularly been able to get outside and walk.   I have missed fresh air and exercise dearly!  I have also been working on exercising in my basement...more on that soon!
2.) Did you do anything fun this weekend?  Definitely.  Friday night our office rented a suite at a local hockey game and we had a blast.  Thomas loves hockey already.  He's such a lil Canadian boy;)
3.) What is the closest object to you that is pink?  Pink post-it notes
4.) Current nail polish: Nails Inc's Charing Crossing (NOTD here)
5.) If you could snap your fingers and be anywhere in the world right now, where would you go? Somewhere sunny and warm.  I miss Vitamin D!  Where I live it is sunny and hot all summer but cloudy pretty much all winter.  I don't usually complain about the weather but mama needs some sun!
6.) Current outfit:  Gap Always Skinny jeans in a light blue, grey t-shirt, navy cardigan with my skull scarf and brown cowboy boots
7.) What is the last movie you saw in theaters? Silver Linings Playbook.  I really liked it!  But I wouldn't exactly call it a comedy, even though it's classified as that in all the award show categories.
8.) If you could only be one age for the rest of your life, which would you choose, and why? Too hard!  Being a kid was fun and care-free, but I also look forward to being settled.  Can't pick!
9.) When is the last time you played on a swing set? Last summer with T-Bone:)
10.) Weekly goals:  Think about Valentine's Day and what I want to do for T.  I already have Jer's gift, but would like to do something for T.  This was his Valentine last year:
You can't tell from this picture, but this heart TERRIFIED Thomas! I returned it after this photo:)

Review - Tegan & Sara

Today I wanted to review Tegan and Sara's seventh studio album Heartthrob.  You may be surprised to hear this is their seventh album, because it is their first attempt to crack into the mainstream.  The twin sisters were born in Calgary  and have been making music together for more than a decade.  They have plenty of street cred and have opened for some of music's biggest acts.  But on this album, the twins made a conscious decision to break into Top 40 Radio.  They teamed up with a producer who has worked with Ke$ha and Kelly Clarkson.  He took their guitar and piano-laden songs and turned them into much more electronic, synth-heavy power songs.  There are great love songs as well as break-up tracks on Heartthrob and it's obvious these two women mean business.  Their first song Closer, in high rotation, is one of my favourite songs right now.  I love the line, "I'm the type that won't be oh so critical...I won't treat you like you're oh so typical".  Heartthrob is ten solid songs that I think a wide range of music lovers will find themselves grooving to.

Nail of the Day

This is my second experience with Nails Inc. and it's just as good as the first.  This polish is impressing me to no end.  Although this is two coats, I easily could have gotten away with just one.  It's very opaque and not streaky on my nails at all.  This red shade is called Charing Crossing, another homage to London.  This British polish is super shiny and high-quality.  I received this colour along with three others in a gift set from my four year old niece for Christmas.  (She clearly has fab taste already!)  I looked Nails Inc. up online and found it's sold at Sephora, for about $11.  Now in my opinion it's a tad high of a price to pay, but this polish is totally worth it!  It even dried quickly and didn't smudge.

Delicious Sandwich

If you have been following this website or my YouTube channel, you will know I am not really a lover of the sandwich.  I eat one a week at least, but only because it's a healthy and easy lunch option.  So, this being said, I am always on the look out for easy lunches and ways to make a sandwich more exciting.  I found this recipe and gave it a try this week.  Delicious!  I wanted to share it with you in case you are also looking for a fresh idea.  If you don't like green onion or cilantro, you could use different fresh herbs.  I think dill would be delish!  I did NOT remove the skins as it says to.  WAY too much work;)
I featured this sandwich in my latest What I Ate video:

MareReads Returns!

After Christmas there was a massive sale on the Chapters website and I decided to indulge.  (Random tip: books on their website are often cheaper than in store and if you spend $25 shipping is free.)  I got five books for $30 which is a steal!  Something I will never understand is why books for my Kobo are often more money than an actual book.  I have gone quite a few months without filming a MareReads video.  But after my Random 2012 Favourites video was posted, I had a ton of feedback asking for more book videos and reviews.  So, that being said, here are the books I bought and also a review of one I've already read!

Review - LUSH Lemony Flutter

I wanted to tell you about another LUSH product I have been using daily.  This is the Lemony Flutter Cuticle Butter.  I have struggled with dry, brittle nails for a long time and finally an aesthetician suggested I try using a cuticle cream to strengthen them.  Coincidentally, this product was included in a fabulous Christmas gift I received last month.
Lemony Flutter is a very thick, concentrated moisturizer that I cover my entire nail and cuticle with daily.  I use a very tiny amount on every nail and really rub it in.  I like to use this while I am at work, so it has time to sink in as it's quite heavy and a bit oily.  The website says:
"Fresh lemons are put into an infusion and lovingly blended in our rich butter base to brighten skin and lighten nails. Each batch contains twenty-two pounds of beeswax and cold-pressed avocado oil to moisturize and soften your skin."
I have noticed a huge difference in the quality of my cuticles and the strength of my nails.  Before, I had at least three or four nails that would consistently peel or chip and now I am down to just one!
The only downside to this is it does have a very strong lemon scent which I am not massively fond of, but it doesn't last as the product really sinks in.
This is a small, 15g sample size.  I have been using this pot five days a week, for three or four weeks straight now and I have hardly used a third of the product.  The regular container is 45g; I can't imagine how long that would last!  You only need to use the smallest amount.
I will definitely continue to use Lemony Flutter and re-purchase a full-size when this runs out.  It may also become a staple gift to give!

Tuesday Questionnaire

1.) Mood:   Feeling great this morning!
2.) What is your signature sleep position? (back, side, stomach, etc)
Hahaha oh I wish I knew what my signature position was.  I am a terrible sleeper, up a million times a night.  I usually end up on either side.  I used to sleep on my stomach, but ever since I was pregnant, I don't anymore.
3.) Current nail polish:
Revlon Fashionista. NOTD coming soon!
4.) What was the last song you listened to?
Let It Go - Dragonette (I am at work right now, so this will change in the next 30 seconds!)
5.) Current outfit:
Long black dress shirt, dark grey leggings, black boots and a multi-coloured scarf
6.) What is your dream car? Chauffeured
7.) Do you like to clean?
Yes! I find cleaning cathartic and I love the instant gratification.  I saw a great saying the other day, "Cleaning with a toddler around is like brushing your teeth with an Oreo".  Love it!  Last Saturday Jer took Thomas out to watch some curling and I cleaned like a maniac.  It was amazing! I cranked the Britney playlist on my iPod and rocked out.  What a work out! Our house has never looked so clean:)
Speaking of Britney, here's a pic from 2009 of my friend Shan and me heading into her concert in Seattle. Best.Show.Ever.
8.) What is your favorite Subway sandwich (if you don't go to Subway, what is another kind of favorite sandwich you have?)? I am not a sandwich person at all.  But, right now I am loving putting avocado, cheese, sprouts and tomato on bread, open-faced and toasting it in the oven. Super yummy!
9.) What is your favorite pair of shoes? I
am pretty fleeting when it comes to shoes.  I love to mix it up with boots, tall and short, flats, wedges, depending on the outfit.  Oh and I am a total slipper girl!  Even in the summer I feel weird without my slips!
10.) Weekly goals:
We are working through organizing and purging our storage room.  It's so therapeutic!  I also want to film a book haul and review, as well as a video on how I have strengthened my nails.  Oh and a vlog of meals:)

Golden Globes Fashion

Jennifer Garner, Emily Blunt, Kate Hudson
I am an awards show junkie.  Serious.  I absolutely love awards show season and the Golden Globes is one of my favorites.  It's relaxed, fun and a mix of both television and movies.  My only snag is that a lot of the movies haven't been released here yet so it can be a bit tough to stay in the loop!
Last night's awards were filled with beautiful gowns and I thought I would share some of my faves.  I definitely think there were more hits than misses with the ladies last night.
There were some definite trends: black, red and cut-outs/cleavage.  I like the cut-out trend.  It's a bit of a surprise, but more classy than a ton of cleavage.
Did you watch the show?  What were your favourite looks? Least favourite?

Claire Danes, Adele, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler
I thought hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler did a fantastic job but I would have liked to have seen more of them:)  Adele's speech was one of the best (she won Original Song for Skyfall) and Ben Affleck winning best director for Argo was also a highlight with his heart-felt words.  It's quite the controversy that he isn't nominated for Best Director at the Oscars next week.
Girls and Homeland were the big winners in the tv category, both I need to start watching!  Also, the made-for-tv movie The Game Change took home a few awards and looks amazing.  The way Julianne Moore channels Sarah Palin is uncanny.
What tv shows or movies are you in to right now?

Nail of the Day

Today's Nail of the Day is a colour I have had my eye on for a couple months now.  It's from the OPI James Bond Skyfall collection and is called GoldenEye.  It's a very shiny gold colour that looks like it might not be very opaque, but was easily in only two coats.  It's very shiny and reflective.  As you can see from the two photos it can look a bit different depending on the angle and the light.  As I mentioned when I hauled this polish, I am now looking for nail polish colours that are a bit different.  GoldenEye most definitely is.  I like the colour, although I think I will save reapplication for a fancy event or fun night out.  I wouldn't call this an 'everyday colour'.

Mama Mare Must Have

Judging from the photos you may think this is going to be a random post with not much weight.
Just keep reading.
Thursday night Jeremy went out for a haircut after dinner.  Thomas and I were upstairs playing and tidying up as we do, winding down for bedtime.  We were in my bathroom and I left for a second to put something away.
I heard the bathroom door close.  No big deal, I thought.
Then I heard the toilet flush.  Ok, not the greatest things.  Perhaps I should check this out.  So I dropped what I was doing to see if the toilet was overflowing.
The bathroom door was locked.
Disbelief and then panic set in right away.  How on earth had Thomas managed to turn the lock inside the door?
My first thought was to call Jeremy back because he was going to have to bust the doorknob off.
Then I realized my phone was inside the bathroom and I had no idea what his number was.  (We just recently got new phones and numbers.)
So I ran downstairs, wracking my brain about what I could use to try and unlock the door.  From my kitchen drawer I grabbed a random key and my ridiculously girly tools.
My first thought turned out to be the right one.  I took my flat-head screwdriver and turned the indent on the front of the knob.  This unlocked the door!
I rushed in and grabbed Thomas, hugging him so tight.  I was still in shock that this had happened!  He on the other hand was completely fine and getting into zero trouble.  (The toilet lid was closed and he had just flushed for fun.)
All of this happened in probably two minutes, but it seemed to go in slow motion!
So, I wanted to share this with the hopes that you will take a minute to check the doorknobs in your house.  If you have the same ones as us, you should be able to just turn the front and unlock it from the outside.  If not, check to see if there is a safety feature in case this same thing happens to you.  If not, perhaps invest in some new knobs.  It will be cheaper than busting the door!
PS I think this gave me a new grey hair!

Wise Word Wednesday

I saw this on Pinterest and just had to use it for a Wise Word Wednesday quote.  It actually gave me chills.  I couldn't believe this to be more true.  I have often met people with low self-esteem or who are body-conscious and wondered why they engaged in such self-hate.  Then I met their mom or dad and it was all clear because the parent was constantly putting themselves down or questioning their kids' decisions.
 Wow.
Or, someone who seemed so at peace with themselves and their parents are exactly the same.
We really are shaping our little ones and their self-esteem, as well as their prejudices or beliefs.
I have no idea how my mum did it, but no matter my weight, I always feel like I look good.  When I look in the mirror I like what I see.  Yes I have bad hair days or frumpy days, but it never affects my self-worth.  When I think about losing weight it's more for health than aesthetic.  I think a huge part of this is that I never heard my mum complain about her weight or how she looked.  She always gave me compliments and instilled in me a belief that I am super awesome:)
I can only hope to pass this down to Thomas.

Nail of the Day

Today's Nail of the Day is a new brand of polish to me.  This polish was a Christmas gift from my niece.  The tag even said, "NOTD".  She is four and knows me so well!  I had only ever seen Nails Inc polishes on blogs and videos of beauty gurus in England and so I was delighted to be given a set of four.  This first colour is St. Pancras.  As you can see it's a burgundy, deep red colour that is all over fashion pages this winter.  Although I used a top coat, this polish is still very glossy which I love.  I used three coats on my nails to get a smooth, consistent finish. It wears well and I can't wait to try the other creamy colours.
(In Canada I have seen Nails Inc at Sephora.)

How To Exercise With a Busy Schedule

A couple days ago I posted my New Year's Resolutions.  I asked on my Facebook page if you had any tips on how to exercise with a busy schedule and little ones running around.  Your response floored me!  Thank you so much to everyone who commented!  I wanted to share these amazing tips with you:

YOUR SUGGESTIONS FOR GETTING EXERCISE WITH LITTLE ONES:

Jennifer - Wii fit!

Cat - Try running up and down the stairs in your house for 2-5 minutes every day.

Loni - Thomas is probably a little young still, but I have a couple of work out videos and when I actually find time to watch them the kids usually try and do the exercises along with me They have so much more energy then I do!

Will- When u get home from work exercise then. BEFORE u sit down. Walking or jogging stairs with the little one on ur back is good too. Jogging with a stroller too. My kids are 11. I STILL get them to jump up on my back to walk stairs. I also will have them sprint along beside me at the track. Just have to think outside the box

Steve - Kettlebell. 15 minutes.

Taryn - I have started dancing.....I pick one song(will increase as i get fitter) and some time in my day between foldinng laundry and making dinner....I turn up the music and just giver! Konnor thinks its hollarous ans kinda dances along to!

Sarah - I do activities with my kids....skating, swimming, etc.

Jasmine - Fitness DVDs are a lifesaver. Saves travel time to and from the gym and one DVD that you can use over and over is the cost of a drop in class, at least in the city! I like Tracy Anderson mat and the Ballet Beautiful series. Mandy Ingber's Yogalosphy is also KILLER.

Megs - Haha Jillian michaels it's only 25 mins so I usually do it when ash is eating in his chair.

Jenny - I like to take my little ones 2 and 3 to the walking track at the sportsplex and they jog around the track with me. My hubby comes along so he keeps an eye on them when they fall behind. Lol

Crystal - My three kids and I have daily dance parties where we just go nuts and shake and jump whatever we feel like and the next morning I feel like I did an intense workout

Brenda - You can exercise at home with your little guy Mare. Youtube "Exercise with Baby" and they show so many exercises that you can di with your little one. It's pretty cool and you get to turn your exercise time into playtime with him

Sarah - Find a good gym with good classes and a good daycare. Spin are great, step classes are great, bootcamp classes etc... the key is to get the little guy used to spending an hour with the daycare so mommy can get an hour for her own health.

Amanda - The only thing I've been able to stick with is an early morning class (6:15 am) before work and life gang up on me. I realize that for you, an early morning class before work would be at, like, 2:45 am, so perhaps my suggestion will not suit your life…for me, going to a class is a must. I have tried to be disciplined enough to just do workout DVDs on my own, but always find excuses to flake out on myself. Once I've paid for a class and have committed to be there, the only real battle is showing up, then the rest just kind of happens.

Cathy - You have to make it a priority. Easy to say, I know. But when I had little ones I did. I got day care for two hours so I could exercise. NOW, my problem is that my kids are adults...so what's my excuse?

Aren't those just fantastic!  I can't wait to try out some of these ideas.  I also had some great tips posted on my YouTube video here.  How do you manage to fit exercise into your schedule?
