Today I wanted to review Tegan and Sara's seventh studio album Heartthrob. You
may be surprised to hear this is their seventh album, because it is their first
attempt to crack into the mainstream. The twin sisters were born in
Calgary and have been making music together for more than a decade.
They have plenty of street cred and have opened for some of music's
biggest acts. But on this album, the twins made a conscious decision to
break into Top 40 Radio. They teamed up with a producer who
has worked with Ke$ha and Kelly Clarkson. He took their guitar and
piano-laden songs and turned them into much more electronic, synth-heavy power
songs. There are great love songs as well as break-up tracks on
Heartthrob and it's obvious these two women mean business. Their first
song Closer, in high rotation, is one of my favourite songs right now.
I love the line, "I'm the type that won't be oh so critical...I
won't treat you like you're oh so typical". Heartthrob is ten solid
songs that I think a wide range of music lovers will find themselves grooving
to.
