This is Bravery

History was made yesterday as 12 year NBA vetran Jason Collins publicly came out.  It is a bit unbelievable to think that this is the first time in any of the four major professional sports that an athlete has officially announced they are gay.
Bravo Jason! His is truly the face of bravery.
I compare this historic moment to the first day Jackie Robinson was signed to the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947.  Collins says he is happy to start the conversation.  There are definitely many other gay men playing in these four major leagues and I think this will create a safe path for them to also come out.  Collins says in this article, "I'm ready to raise my hand but, you know, you still look around like, 'OK, come on, guys.' It's time for someone else in the room to raise their hand and say, 'You know what? Yeah, so big deal. I can still play basketball. I can still help the team win, and that's what's most important".
The outpouring of love and support for Collins has been fantastic. Kobe Bryant tweeted, "Don't suffocate who u r because of the ignorance of others" and Steve Nash said, "The time has come, maximum respect".   Even the White House and Former President Bill Clinton were quick to lend support.
I wish for a day when everyone could be comfortable to completely be themselves and openly be who they are.  I look forward to a time when my son is surprised this was even a big deal, just as we now welcome people of any background and ethnicity to play professional sports.
Bravo Jason Collins.  Your bravery gives me goosebumps and hope.

Happy 10th Birthday iTunes!

Today is the tenth anniversary of the birth of iTunes.  Before this day, we could only download music illegally with programs like Kazaa, LimeWire and Napster.  But Apple's Steve Jobs revolutionized how we buy music and access songs with the invention of iTunes.  I bought my first iPod in 2005 and only download music, movies and tv shows legally.  At $1.29 or less per song, I definitely get my money's worth!
One of my favourite things to do is periodically check iTunes to see what's new and what's discounted. Jeremy feels the same and one of the best gifts we ever receive is an iTunes gift card!  As we recently did a post playing shuffle on our iTunes, I thought today we would share our top 15 most played songs on iTunes.

1 - Call Me Maybe - Carly Rae Jepsen
2 - We Found Love - Rihanna
3 - We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together - Taylor Swift
4 - Super Bass - Nicki Minaj
5 - Til the World Ends (Femme Fatale Remix) - Britney Spears, Ke$ha & Nicki Minaj
6 - Turning Tables - Adele
7 - Part of Me - Katy Perry
8 - Moment for Life - Nicki Minaj & Drake
9 - Boyfriend - Justin Bieber
10 - Desperate Measures - Marianas Trench
11 - Rolling in the Deep - Adele
12 - So Good - B.O.B.
13 - Good Girl - Carrie Underwood
14 - Teenage Dream - Katy Perry
15 - Smile - Avril Lavigne

1 - The '59 Sound - The Gaslight Anthem
2 - Blue Jeans and White T-Shirts - The Gaslight Anthem
3 - Even Cowgirls Get the Blues - The Gaslight Anthem
4 - Agent Zero - Arkells
5 - Hey Jealousy - Gin Blossoms
6 - Everlong - Foo Fighters
7 - Sex on Fire - Kings of Leon
8 - Born Losers - Matthew Good
9 - Unemployable - Pearl Jam
10 - One Foot Out the Door - Arkells
11 - Go With the Flow - Queens of the Stone Age
12 - Through Glass - Stone Sour
13 - Night Moves - Bob Seger
14 - Primetime Deliverance - Matthew Good Band
15 - Blue Skies Over Bad Lands - Matthew Good

It's interesting to note that in both of our Top 15 List, most songs are ones we have acquired since we started using iTunes.  It goes to show that your more current songs are the ones that will get more play counts.  My count was re-started in 2010 when I bought my MacBook. Had it not changed and been keeping track since 2005, it probably would have looked much different!
What are your most-played songs?

OOTD - Leopard Print

Thursday, April 25, 2013

Recently I passed a significant (to me) milestone on my Youtube Channel.  I tipped over the 50,000 views mark.  Yes, many others have much more.  But I am proud of my little corner of the internet!  I take pride in my channel and this blog, as well as the interactions we have on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.  It's been rewarding to find others all over the world who share my interests and positivity.  To mark the occasion, my friend Loni surprised me with this piece of cake complete with a lit candle.  Delicious and heartfelt.  I know not everyone understands my hobby, but thank you for supporting me.  It brings me more joy than I can express.
Are there any specific videos or blog posts you'd like to see?

Wise Word Wednesday

I completely stole this quote from my good friend Loni's blog: Lonopia.  It describes Loni to a tee and is just one of the many reasons she's so fabulous.  I think it's also a great quote to live by.  Thanks Loni!

Tuesday Questionnaire

1.) Mood:  Good!  I have been trying hard to not obsess over little things, especially things I have no control over.  It actually seems to be working!
2.) Do you have a subscription to any magazines? Yes.  Recently I bought a Cosmo magazine (part of one of my favourite deals: 3 for $10 at the WalMart check-out! Almost all their magazines are included...such a steal!) and in that issue there was an offer for a year-long subscription for cheaper than I'd ever seen so I jumped on it!  Then, I was asked to support a school fundraiser so I bought a subscription to In Style.  Still waiting for that one to start!  I also enjoy Jeremy's Rolling Stone magazines...as does Thomas:
3.) Name one thing you are looking forward to in the near future.Jer and I have tickets to see Jerry Seinfeld for our wedding anniversary.  Can't wait for a date night of hilarity!
4.) Current nail polish: Wet n Wild's Candy-licious
5.) Do you know how to identify any constellations? I think one looks like a 'W'?  Maybe a shopping cart? Hahah clearly, the answer is no!
6.) Do you like the idea of electronic reading (Kindle, iPad, etc.) or prefer an old-fashioned book? I love my Kobo because it's light, small and great for travel, as well as reading in bed.  But, I do like to alternate and read an actual book.
7.) Current outfit: Printed pants from Old Navy, black sweater from Joe Fresh, J Crew jean jacket and a massive ring my friend brought me back from Cuba.
8.) Do you like karaoke? No!  Too awkward to watch and I would never have the guts to do it myself!
9.) What was your favorite cereal as a kid? Shreddies
10.) Weekly goals: Finish going through my clothes to throw out/send to the thrift store and switch over my winter for summer clothes.

Songs I Am Loving

I've said it before and I will say it again:
My name is Marianne, and I am a music addict.
My love of music started probably before I could talk, thanks to my family.
When feeling any type of emotion, I turn to music.  Sad? Music.  Happy? Music.  Tired? Music.  Grumpy? Music.  The power of a good song is like nothing else to me and it brings me infinite joy to already see Thomas dancing, clapping and singing.  Serious joy right here.
I like to do random posts with songs I am playing over and over. This was my latest and now, here's some more!
What songs are you jamming to right now?  Actually writing tracks out drives home the fact that I have the weirdest taste in music.  Pop to country to rap and beyond...music is my love.

Old Navy: Perfect For Basics

We don't have an Old Navy anywhere near us, so when I have a chance to shop there, I usually go pretty hard! Here's a video with the items I recently bought at Old Navy!

My Next Tattoo?

For about three years now I have been contemplating what my next tattoo will be.  I already have three and if you want to hear all about them, last summer I filmed the I Heart Tattoos Tag
But now I am starting to think more seriously about it, contemplating getting one on or around my 30th birthday in July.
I have a whole board dedicated to tattoo ideas on my Pinterest.  There are a few different angles I am thinking of:
- love
- Thomas
- music
- to thine own self be true (Shakespeare)
It's so hard to narrow it down!
One thing I am sure if is I want to be able to cover it up.  My three are easy to camouflage (being on both hips and between my shoulders) and I've always valued that.  While I am on the radio now and it's completely appropriate to have visible ink, that may not always be the case.  Also, I worry about sun damage, age, fading, sagging...you get the idea.
I am considering just above the elbow, my ankle, the top of my foot, ribcage...again too many choices!
Do you have a tattoo? What do you have? Are you thinking of getting one?
Here are a few of the images I pinned as inspiration:

I would love to hear what your take on tattoos is.  Leave a comment below, Tweet me or Facebook me!

If you saw my nail polish haul, then this colour will look very familiar.  Today's Nail of the Day is Revlon's Scandalous.  This is two coats without a top coat.  Again, I am in love.  Revlon polish is really getting a great review from this blogger lately.  Usually a glitter polish takes countless coats to be opaque, but I just applied this like I do any colour.  It has chipped a bit, but I think glitter does a number on the strength of one's nails, so it's to be expected.
I am almost out my base coat and am wondering what you use?

Another Batch of Recent Pics

In case you don't follow me on FacebookTwitter or Instagram (PS you should!), I thought I would post some recent photos again today.  The above photo is from a recent date Jeremy and I went on where I wore my new Joe Fresh leggings, a Guess necklace and some fabulous red shoes.
Thomas naps every afternoon and one day recently I decided to treat myself to a Lush bath.  If having a bath at 2 o'clock in the afternoon is wrong, I don't want to be right!
On a trip away recently I was introduced to these terrific red solo cups.  They just seem to make the drink taste better;)
Here's a photo I posted of my FOTD (Face of the Day).
Just randomly cleaning out my bathroom and swatching all my lipsticks.
This was my first attempt at making an omelette.   Not too shabby!
Yes, it happened.  I had to scrape my car windows this past Friday.  How is this still happening?!?

And this may be one of my favourite photos ever.  Out for a walk with my lil man.

MareReads: The Happiness Project

Today I thought I would review a book I recently finished: The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin. This is a book that's caught my eye for a couple years now.  I have seen it displayed on countless shelves among bestsellers and just never followed through to read it.  Finally I decided to bite the bullet and give it a go.
As you can see from the picture, the premise of this book is based on one year in the life of a woman in her pursuit of happiness.  She does in-depth research on ways to be more happy and then dedicates each month to a different area of her life, working to improve.  I was mistakenly expecting more of a novel and the story of this woman's life.  But she includes a lot of research, fact and information.  Rubin does include first-hand accounts of how her research is put into play, but I would have liked a little more personal experience and a little less research.
That being said, I definitely got a lot out of The Happiness Project.  As with any "self-help" book, I took away bits and pieces to incorporate into my own life.  Rubin talks a lot about acting how you want to feel.  You want to be happy?  Act it, and sooner than expected you will notice yourself actually feeling happier.  She also realized that it takes more effort to be positive than negative, but the hard work really is worth it.  I found myself putting some of her ideas into practice and almost instantly noticed a difference.
I think no matter what your stage of life you could benefit from Rubin's honesty in this book.  I have subscribed to receive a daily happiness quote through her website I linked above and am loving them too!

Today's Nail of the Day is Essie's Jag-U-Are.  I am not sure why a gold reflection is showing in this photo because there isn't any gold shimmer in the polish.  It's an orangey-red colour that I think is great for every day.  It's not a shocking red or matte or dark.  It's just a nice daily red.  I will say that it chipped on the second day...so I am not sure if it is this polish or Essie in general.  I will wear this again for sure when I want a subtle red.

Wise Word Wednesday

I fondly remember watching Siskel and Ebert's movie reviews every weekend growing up.  Their opinion and rating resonated with me.  I always based what movie to spend my hard-earned allowance on, depending on their thumbs up or thumbs down.  I was sad to hear of the remaining half of this duo's death last week.  I thought it was fitting to honour Roger Ebert today with a quote:

I Think Spring Is Here

Monday, April 8, 2013

Today's Nail of the Day is a unique one.  The photo above was taken seven days after I painted my nails.  I didn't get around the taking a picture when the polish was fresh and so I wasn't anticipating having a blog post on this.  Until day after day passed with no chips.  Zero touch-ups.  This is pretty much a miracle!  This is Revlon's Urban.  Gorgeous.  Still obsessed with my darks.  This has a purple tinge to it as well that isn't showing up in this picture I posted to my Instagram.  Thanks to you who recommended this shade.  A week's worth of wear is rare.  (PS I am on vacay right now which is why I am not holding the polish bottle in this shot;)

Review - NKOTB

This week's review is for the newest album from New Kids on the Block: 10.  Are they still considered "New Kids"?  Or is it just NKOTB now that they are 40 year old men?  Regardless of what you want to call them, these five guys are back with, you guessed it, their tenth studio album and first since 2008.  On this record NKOTB is definitely debuting a more mature sound and they sound at ease with their age as well as place in the music industry.  Let's be honest...did any of us predict such a comeback?  Doubtful!  They are touring this summer and this album coincides with their trip.  NKOTB isn't trying to gain new fans, but instead are honouring their long-time admirers with 10.  The first single, "The Remix (I Like The)" is so catchy and fun.  It's an upbeat track, the perfect to kick off 10.  There are a lot of ballads on this album, but also some more tracks like the first single to get you going:)  I think 10 will not disappoint NKOTB fans.
Can I also add they clean up well? ;)
I am in love with the video for the first single, "The Remix (I Like The)" and just had to include it here for you to enjoy a lil eye candy:

Genius Car Organizer

Ohhhh the addiction of Pinterest.  Are you just as obsessed as me?  If you are, my Pinterest is: here. Although, I think I Pin more than I acutually do!  I need to go back on my boards and actually do some of the things I have pinned!
This is one thing I will be trying for sure.  I don't know about you, but my van is like a black hole.  There are toys, forgotten hats and more cheerios than I think would fill a box;)
I saw this on Pinterest and just had to share it because I think it is pure genius!  You know I love a good bargain and am a sucker for organizational tools.  This is both of these.  Behold, a dollar store shoe organizer used as a car organzier.  Voila!  You could put snacks, toys, maps, tools, first aid packs...the list is endless.

Do you have any car organization tips?  We are about to head into the road trip season and I am sure we could all use some new ideas:)

Nail of the Day

Finally a Spring NOTD!  This is a pretty, opaque lilac colour from the Wet n Wild Megalast line.  It's called On a Trip.  Yet again, this type of polish impresses me.  It goes on quickly, dries fast and lasts pretty well.  I think this is a perfect colour for spring.  (I have been asked before where I find Wet n Wild products and they are available at WalMart and Superstore.)  This polish was about less than $3!
