Nail of the Day

I am so impressed with today's Nail of the Day.  As you can see from the picture it's another Avon polish, this time the Gel Finish line.  It says it's a 7-in-1 nail polish, set to include shine, gel-like finish, vivid colour, base coat, top coat, protection and strengthener.  I applied this as it's supposed to be, completely on its own.  If you are someone who doesn't want to fuss around with a top and base coat, this polish is for you!  It makes application much faster and this might be the easiest polish I've found to work with in a long time.  It's so shiny, opaque and quick-drying.  This colour is Mudslide and it's a beautiful neutral for fall.

Mama Mare Must Have

This is not a very flashy subject, but come on moms, this is important stuff!  We are talking diaper rash. This instalment of Mama Mare Must Have is all about the best diaper cream I've found.
Thomas, my two year old, doesn't get diaper rash very often as we use cloth diapers.  (I've made a video about cloth diapers you can see here.)
We've tried a few different kinds, but nothing works as well as this.  Hands down.  This is Ihle's Paste, pronounced "eels".  It's the best diaper cream we've found.
It's a very thick paste, with virtually no smell.  (You might be thinking that diaper cream is bad to use with cloth diapers.  We use a liner as a buffer and it works great for us.)  I am not sure what you would call this cream.  It's not a prescription, but we have to ask the pharmacist to order it, but it only takes a day to arrive.  We buy it from Shoppers Drug Mart.  This 500g tub costs $18 which sounds outrageous, but lasts forever!
I hope this helps you if you're needing a good diaper cream.  It is supposed to also work well on heat rash, cuts, chapped skin etc.  Good luck!

One Great Bottle

You might think I am crazy for writing an entire blog post about a water bottle.  But this bad boy deserves some recognition.  Behold the Blender Bottle:
My lovely Aunt bought this bottle for me at WalMart.  I use this bottle mainly for my protein shakes.  I love how wide the top is, because I can scoop my protein powder directly into it. It's also easy to add ice or lemon etc.
Then the metal cylinder goes into the bottle and helps to mix the powder into the water.  It acts like a little internal mixer and really helps make the drinker smoother.  This probably seems very simple, but it's the bottle I use daily and has cut down on extra work for me.
The Blender Bottle is also fabulous for water, especially during my workouts or walks.  I like the pop top and find it easy to drink out of.  It's also easy to open, especially when I have my 30 Minute Hit gloves on.
I believe a glass of water is considered to be 8 oz.  So, this 26 oz (750mL) bottle equals more than three glasses.  If you are supposed to have eight glasses a day, this bottle makes it so easy!
Do you have a go-to bottle or something that you use to make it easier to drink water or shakes?

Tuesday Questionnaire

I haven't done a Tuesday Questionnaire in months and I thought, why not do some now?  I found these questions on a tag video that MsGoldGirl did.  I love watching Marnie's videos because she's so honest, funny and completely down to earth.  This was the 99 Questions Tag, so I have broken it up over the next few weeks of Tuesdays.

1:Do you sleep with your closet doors open or closed? I use the closet in our guest room, but Jeremy's closet in our room is always closed.
2:Do you take the shampoos and conditioner bottles from hotel? If they are of a good quality, absolutely! I also love the complimentary shower caps.
3:Do you sleep with your sheets tucked in or out? We just have a duvet, nothing tucked in.  When I do sleep in a bed with sheets, I always un-tuck!
4:Have you ever stolen a street sign before?  Nope!
5:Do you like to use post-it notes? Daily, haha! I love all kinds of stationary and snatch any chance to use it.
6:Do you cut out coupons but then never use them? Sadly, yes. I have coupons that are fabulous, just sitting in my kitchen drawer.  Terrible.
7:Would you rather be attacked by a big bear or a swarm of a bees? Um, do I have to answer? I guess bees.
8:Do you have freckles? Tons! Love them:)
9:Do you always smile for pictures? I do.  Although, my favourite photos are candids. I love seeing a moment captured without anyone knowing.
10:What is your biggest pet peeve?  Haha, this could be a whole blog post or video.  People who aren't true to their word, idle gossip, slow drivers and people who constantly complain but take no action.

Stay tuned next Tuesday for the second part of this questionnaire :)

Dealing With These Bangs

It's HAIRCUT WEEK!!! I cannot wait to get my hair dealt with!  But, in the meantime, I made a video showing the ways I pin back my bangs.  I had a request for the tutorial and was happy to do it.  I think it will help if you are growing out your bangs, are feeling lazy, or just want to add a little texture to the front of your 'do.

Pics Recently

I have been just run off my feet with tasks and meetings and family stuff so I apologize for not updating this blog daily as I usually do.  I wanted to share some photos I've snapped recently of some of my bright spots among the hectic days.
The above photo is a bit of a surprise.  I live in wine country yet I have never drank much vino.  Until now. I am loving this red!
My cohost and I do Monday Night Football bets and after I won one week, I got to paint his nails.  So pretty! (I used Sally Hansen Rock Star, Essie DJ Play That Song and China Glaze Flip Flop Fantasy)
September 10th marked another year without my dad and my sweet husband brought home these vibrant daisies to brighten my day.
Still loving my 30 Minute Hit workouts and this shirt is my new fave to wear while sweating it out.  A gift from the beautiful Thaila.  Also, how glossy are my nails? One of loves: OPI Lincoln Park After Dark.
I love our weekend dates.  T is loving hard on edamame lately.
I am loving hard on kale chips.  I use this recipe from my beloved friend Emilie.  Yum!
This was my Sunday Bunday no make up look.  I have been enjoying letting my face breathe a bit on the weekend.
I have been experimenting with some different makeup combos as the weather slowly turns.  This was a choice this week.  I wore Tarte blush in Tipsy, MAC eyeshadow in Woodwinked, Nars Blondie for my brows, Revlon lip butter in Juicy Papaya and MAC mineralized skin finish in Soft and Gentle.
No caption necessary ;)

Nail of the Day

Today's Nail of the Day is a tough one to photograph as it's a duo-chrome shade from OPI.  This is Not Like the Movies from the Katy Perry collection.  It's a light purple, silvery green polish.  I know, tough to see from the pictures, but effective and pretty in person.  I was a bit disappointed when I first started to apply this polish as it is very sheer.  But after three coats, it is opaque.  I think this is a fun transition colour into fall.

Review: Forks Over Knives

After a recommendation from my mum, Jer and I watched Forks Over Knives.  It was suggested to me at a very opportune time because for the past month I have been more aware of the food I eat and dabbling in some vegetarian dishes.  I have always eaten a lot of meat, being raised on the idea of a meat, veg and a starch at dinner.  But I just haven't been feeling 100% this year and finally decided to take a hard look at the food I am eating.
Anyway, rambling!
We watched this movie which follows this train of thought:
"The experts in Forks Over Knives advocate a whole-food, plant-based diet. The program is based on whole or minimally processed plants, primarily fruits, vegetables, whole grains, tubers, and legumes. It excludes or minimizes animal-based foods such as meat (including poultry and fish), dairy, and eggs, as well as refined foods like bleached flour, refined sugar, and oil."
It was eye-opening that is for sure.  You can read more about it via the link above, but basically the doctors in this documentary have found the health benefits of a plant-based diet to be exponential.  Some of it wasn't new information, obviously cutting out fast food and processed foods is a good idea.  But to see the correlation of meat and disease was shocking.
I think I will continue to research and find alternative protein sources to red meat and just see what happens.  I can't deny how much better I feel on the days when I don't have certain meat products.
Have you seen this?  Do you eat meat? I am so new to this I would love to hear!

Trans-Atlantic Swap With Thaila!

This is one of my favourite things I've done with YouTube so far! I have been following Thaila for a couple years now and was delighted to have the chance to send her some Canadian goodies! As you will hear in our videos, we both had some fun un-boxing our presents:)

Here's a link for Thaila's video

And here's where you can see mine.

I am so honoured to have done this swap with Thaila and to be able to call her my Trans-Atlantic friend:)

This Hot Mess Needs A Change!

The time has come.  I am over my hair. OVER it. We are through and I need a change.  I used to switch up my hairstyle and cut about every 6-8 months, but I have been sporting the long hair now for years. Yes it's beautiful, but I am so ready for a change!  Now, I am not talking colour.  I love my red hair and have never coloured it.  Until my few greys turn into many, I am staying au naturel.
But, a cut is necessary.  I am a serious hot mess right with grown out bangs and non-existent layers. This is what I am resorting to:

I am over the length and want something lighter, easier to manage and more fun!  I have been putting together some inspiration and ideas on a Pinterest board.  I am thinking of something that keeps a bit of length, but takes some serious inches off.  Layers definitely, but I might switch up the fringe.
Any suggestions? I'd love to hear if you like any of my pictures and ideas or if you think I should get something completely different.  All I know for sure is that some scissors need to come at this hot mess.  And fast.

Nail of the Day

Today's Nail of the Day is one that surprised me.  Now, you know I love the Wet n Wild Megalast polishes in general and this one, Sugar Coat, is no exception.  The formulation is great and the application is easy with the wide brush.  But what caught me off guard was how much I love this colour.  I never thought a light baby pink would suit me, but I think this will be a staple, especially when I need a subtle neutral nail.  (Ignore the chip on the middle finger, I may have gotten a little over-excited while grating cheese!)

Wardrobe Challenge!

I have been friends with this face for more than 20 years.  More than 2/3 of my life!  So it really should come as no surprise that she emailed me with an idea that mirrors one I had been contemplating. Great (redheaded) minds think alike and all.

Here's part of the email Shan sent me:

"I have challenged myself to not buy any clothing or shoes until I have worn *everything* I already own at least once or until Boxing Day. Whichever comes first. I'm not including summer clothes or formal wear since I probably won't get a legitimate chance to wear those in the next few months."

Instantly I was IN!!!  I also have a lot of clothes that I don't wear.  Why do I keep these? I would be much better off either consigning or donating.  Shan explained how she was going to keep track of what she's worn:

"I've put those tiny hair elastics around the hooks of all my hangers and bobby pins on all my folded clothes and shoes. When I wear something, the elastic/bobby pin comes off. Come Boxing Day, anything that hasn't been worn is being consigned or going to the thrift store.  I figure one of two things will happen: I'll be able to purge a lot of unnecessary stuff from my closet, or I'll get more creative and start getting into making much better use of my wardrobe and won't feel so bored with the stuff I already have."

I think my favourite part of this challenge will be to get creative and find new outfits, pairings and ways to reinvent clothes.  Also, it will be beneficial once and for all the know that every single piece in my wardrobe is wearable.

So....what do you think? Interested? Want to join us?  I am going to be doing updates over the next few months, videos, pictures and posts to see how it is going.

Nail of the Day

Check out this polish!  This is China Glaze's Liquid Leather.  I need to put this aside immediately for Halloween.  This is a gorgeous true black that I think is a bit glam too!  I got a manicure recently with my two nieces and chose this colour.  Love it!  My friend Tania did all the work and the result was beautiful.  It did take quite a while to dry, but was well worth it.

Back to School Tag

It's the first day of school!  At least in BC it is:)  I wanted to celebrate today by posting my version of a Back to School Tag my friend Loni created.  I also thought I would post this extra-serious head shot from my broadcast school days:
(What is this girl thinking?! ;)
#1. What is/was your favorite thing to shop for when going back to school?
I am all about everything school supply related!  If I could shop for other kids' school supplies I totally would! I love pens, paper, notebooks, highlighters...all of that fun stuff!  Any excuse I have to buy school supplies and it's happening!
#2. What is/was your favorite subject?
I loved English Lit and Theatre
#3. What is/was your least favorite class?
P.E.
#4. Who is/was your favorite teacher?
I was so lucky to have the opportunity to be taught by many amazing men and women who shaped my childhood and teenage years.  They even helped me after graduation and if the time/need arose, I wouldn't hesitate to tap into their wisdom.  Maybe this time we could do it over a glass of wine ;)
Then, in broadcast school I had the top leaders/professionals to teach me and prepare me for the industry.
#5. What would you classify your status as? (ie. nerd, jock, popular etc...)
Probably nerd/theatre geek.  And proud of it!
#6. What are/were your extra curricular activities?
I loved figure skating in elementary school, then transitioned to dance and volleyball before focussing solely on theatre.  Let me guess, you're not suprised;)
#7. Favorite Item on the Cafeteria Menu?
We actually didn't have a cafeteria in my small high school until the end of my tenure.  Even when there was the opportunity to buy lunch, I always brought one, lovingly made by my mum.  Yes, I was spoiled!  I do remember how grown up I felt though in Grade 12 when we would walk to our local coffee shop before school to buy a fancy coffee:)
#8. School you attend, or last school you attended?
The last school I attended was BCIT: The BC Institute of Technology and I can't recommend it enough!
#9. Do you know, or did you know what you wanted to pursue after school?
I always wanted to be an actress, but then my mum showed me that the average actress in Canada makes eight thousand dollars a year and I realized I should probably pursue something else!  I grew up watching the news, loved to "be on", enjoyed writing and speaking in public etc and so a career in broadcasting was a perfect fit for me.  I have done an entire video about Why I Got Into Broadcasting.
#10. What are you most looking forward to about this school year?
Well, I can't really answer this one because I am not in school, nor is anyone in my house.  But, that being said, I still love the beginning of September.  It will always feel like a fresh start and the chance to begin something new.
