Never Say Never

I thought as a follow up to yesterday's post about bullying and Pink Shirt Day, I would share something I turn to when I need a little inspiration.  Music is my therapy.  Happy, angry, sad, discouraged...you name it, I turn to music.  This is my Never Say Never playlist.  To relieve stress, get pumped up, relax, boost my mood...I listen to this:

Acceptance. Not Tolerance.

 I am bullied.

At one point or another, everyone has been bullied.

It makes my heart heavy to think of how much bullying there is every day, in many different ways.  Some people are bullied in person at school, work or home.  Others suffer from intense cyber bullying.  Physical, emotional, the list, sadly, is endless.  The horrific epidemic of suicide due to bullying is a serious and very real problem.  I remember being bullied in high school but it was very different than I understand it to be now.  I cannot imagine being a vulnerable teen and being subjected to social media and the bullying that comes with it.

In my case, I get nasty comments from nameless, faceless, anonymous trolls on the internet.  We also get negative, terrible, comments regarding our radio show. (And I'm not talking constructive criticism)   These rarely get to me as I've been in the media for ten years and have developed a detachment with a thick skin.  But, sometimes it does sting or make me pause.  I usually wonder what is happening in that person's life to make them so miserable that they have to take it out on me.  It can often be blindingly obvious why someone is a bully.  This doesn't make it ok.  It makes me think of another quote:
My mum is one of the kindest and selfless people I know.  She's always led by example.  What's funny is that I didn't even know she was teaching me self-confidence, love and acceptance.  It's just her nature.  I believe I have confidence and strong self-esteem because I never once heard my mum put herself or anyone else down.  It's rare to hear her speak ill of anyone or anything.  She has strong beliefs and morals but never passes judgement on others.

While interviewing a ninth grader about Pink Shirt Day this week, she said something that I just can't get out of my head.   They've been encouraged to follow a motto of Acceptance Not Tolerance.  How simply brilliant is that? It's not enough to just tolerate someone.  We must try to learn about them, understand where they are coming from and accept them.

I applaud the efforts of Pink Shirt Day but encourage a stand against bullying year-round.  Sometimes it's best to let it slide off your back, like water on a duck.  I firmly believe in picking my battles.  But, sometimes you have to stand up for yourself.  If you aren't able to stand up to a bully yourself, tell someone.  Anyone.  Find someone you trust and ask their advice.

You are not alone.

Nail of the Day

This beautiful Nail of the Day is a steal!  I found it at Dollarama and featured it in my last haul video.  It was only $2!  At WalMart it is $8 and Superstore sells it for $9.  Bargain.  This Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure polish is Right Set Red.  This is a bold, beautiful red.  The formula was fabulous.  It was another brand of polish I had never tried, but loved!  (I had only tried to XTreme Wear from Sally Hansen, which is also great.)  It was very easy to apply and lasted so long without a chip that it grew out!  The brush is very wide and easy to use.  I love finding high quality polish for a deal!

Hometown Pride

I couldn't be more proud to know Justin Kripps and be from the same town as him.  We grew up riding the bus to school together and I felt such a swell of pride watching him compete in both the two man and four man bobsleigh in Sochi.
Here is the full interview we did with Justin before he left for the Olympics:

Video Catch-Up

I realize I have been uploading videos quite frequently on my YouTube channel, but haven't been posting them on this site as much.  I don't want my blog to get weighed down with constant video entries, so if you want to keep up on videos, make sure to subscribe to my YouTube channel:)  I also usually post on my Twitter, Instagram and Facebook when a video goes up.
To catch you up, here are some videos I've done recently:

Pics Lately

Here's another Pics Lately post!  In case you don't follow me on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram, here are some pics I've posted lately.  The above is from last night when I did a little pampering to feel better. I am so sick of being sick! I had a nice long hot shower, did a face mask, exfoliated, then used some nice products after the shower.
One thing that's really bothering me about being sick is how little I can go to my beloved 30 Minute Hit.  I went a couple times last week and it felt so great, but then I got a fever.  Perhaps a little overzealous to go before feeling better!  But, I was happy to wear my Justin Kripps Bobsleigh shirt, supporting a guy I used to ride the bus to school with who is now competing in Sochi.
Last week I covered the news casts for our sister radio station and that meant getting to work at 4am.  Needless to say I brought my makeup in and did it about an hour and half later!
I am trying to get better about washing my makeup brushes.  A product I am liking will be in my February Favourites video.
If I do say so myself, I have been nailing dinners lately!  I think I might do a whole video on my current favourite recipes.  This photo above is rosemary chicken, roasted yam and corn.
This bracelet is from Le Cheap C'est Chic and was a fundraiser for a local family whose very young daughter is going through cancer treatment. I love the bracelet and what it stands for.
Sunshine is so rare in the winter where I live so when it does peek through, I shove T out the door!
We had friends over and played Friends Scene It recently.  It was a lot of fun...except for the fact that Jeremy won ;)

9 Photos For Our 9th Valentine's Day

Happy Valentine's Day!  In honour of the Day of Love, I wanted to share a love letter about my darling husband Jeremy.

Without ever saying so, Jer has always encouraged me to 100% be myself, without apology.  Jer leads by example without knowing.  He's funny, passionate, loyal, protective, smart, creative, accepting, respectful and reliable, among countless other amazing qualities.  You know that saying, "Carry yourself in such a way so that if someone talks bad about you others won't believe it"?  That's Jeremy.  He's such stand-up guy that anyone would question negative talk about him.  Jeremy rocks my world but never seeks attention for it.  He is authentically himself and I am honoured to be his wife.  I am proud to be on his arm, to have his last name and to be his family.

To celebrate our ninth Valentine's Day together, here are nine photos:
This was taken by our friend Jess in 2006 before we did a few months of long distance.  I moved away for work and it was not easy...but worthwhile in the end!
This was our first big trip together in 2006.  We went to Philadelphia to see my brother and his girlfriend (now our sister in law!).  We spent a few days in New York and this was taken on the top of the Empire State Building.
This is one of my favourite photos of us.  It was taken the day after Jeremy's dad and step-mom's wedding.
This was one of our most fun dates!  We went to a Red Wings game in Vancouver.  I have never been stared down so hard in the ladies room.  Don't like my jersey?
One of my absolute favourite things to do is to make this guy laugh.  He in turn makes me laugh too.  A lot.
Best. Day. Ever. May 2009.
Our honeymoon in Jamaica.  Paradise.
Jeremy as a father is an intense love and role model that makes me tear up it is so fierce.  Thomas is incredibly lucky to call this man Dad.  Being a parent is the hardest things we've ever done and Jeremy is a steady, loving and supportive teammate.  Team Unstoppable.
To the Love of My Life, thank you for nine wonderful Valentines.  Here's to decades more.

Nail of the Day

Today's Nail of the Day is my first ever polish from Lise Watier.  It was a gift sent to me by a lovely subscriber, Kaylyn.  She sent it as a Valentine!  How cute is that? (She also sent some chocolates which were devoured instantly;)
This colour is Rose Frimas.  Kaylyn said she thought it would suit my colouring and it absolutely does. It's a beautiful mauve that I think could be pulled off any month of the year.  Also happens to be perfect for Valentine's Day!  It's just a little bit different than any other purple shade of polish I have.  The application was smooth and simple and hasn't chipped in days.  A great first impression!
There is one quirky component to this polish.  It comes with a light!  It shines down the brush onto your nail to make application easier.  I didn't find it made painting my nails any simpler, but I do enjoy the gimmick!
Have you tried anything from Lise Watier?

Recipe: Baked Ziti (Forks Over Knives)

I have been trying to cut out meat in some meals and been loving using my Forks Over Knives cookbook.  I have always been very intimidated as I was raised to have a meat, a vegetable and a potato/rice for dinner. Forever and always.  Also, the ingredients many recipes call for have my eyes glazing over thinking they will be tough to find or expensive or taste gross.  But, it's been easier than expected as I take baby steps, trying a new recipe every few weeks.
The big shocker?  Even Jeremy has been surprised to find "plant-based eating" yummy.
Sunday I made this Baked Ziti and after posting the above photo online, I had requests to share the recipe. My pleasure! It was new for me to make a baked pasta dish without cheese, but it was a hit!

Ingredients:
1 large yellow onion, peeled and diced
4 cloves of garlic, peeled and minced
2 tablespoons oregano
1 large can of diced tomatoes
salt and pepper to taste
1 lb whole grain penne
1 batch No Cheese Sauce (recipe below)

No Cheese Sauce:
1 large yellow onion, peeped and coarsely chopped
1 large red pepper, seeded and chopped
3 tablespoons of toasted cashews (about 4 min in the oven at 300)
1 tablespoon tahini, optional (I didn't use it)
1 cup nutritional yeast (I found in bulk at a health food store)
salt to taste

Combine all ingredients in a blender and puree until smooth and creamy.  Add half a cup of water if necessary.  (Was totally necessary for me!)

Baked Ziti:
 1. Bring large pot of water to boil.
2. Preheat oven to 375.
3. Place onion in large saucepan and saute over medium heat for about 7 minutes or until the onion starts to brown.  Add tablespoons of water if needed to avoid sticking.  Add garlic and oregano and cook for another minute.  Add tomatoes, salt and pepper and cook for about 5 minutes.
4. Cook the pasta until it's not quite al dente (it will finish cooking in the oven).  Drain the noodles and add them to the tomato mixture.  Mix well and pour into a 9x13 inch baking dish.  Top with the No Cheese Sauce and bake uncovered for about 25 minutes or until bubbly.

That's it!  It's make six very generous portions and is even yummier as leftovers.  Let me know if you try this! Don't be intimidated if something says "vegan" or "vegetarian" like I have been.  A myth that I have been able to bust is that it wouldn't make me as full.  Not the case!  When looking at a recipe my main concern is the number of ingredients.  I like to keep things simple:)

Review: Magic Bullet Juice Bullet

I was so lucky to receive this juicer for Christmas and ever since, we've been loving it! We have a couple juices a day and although I am far from an expert, I thought I would share my thoughts on this particular juicer and what we thinking of juicing in general. Hope you enjoy!

Nail of the Day

I think I have found my new favourite nude nail polish.  Today's Nail of the Day is Carrie Underwood's Nicole by OPI in Southern Charm.  I haven't had very good luck with Nicole by OPI.  In fact, I haven't bought a colour from them in about three years.  It's just never been my favourite formula or colour selection.  But, when Carrie Underwood announced she was coming out with her own collection, I knew I had to try just one!  I went for this pinky nude shade and am very impressed with it.  The application was easy and smooth and after three days there are no chips. I wasn't too pleased with the $10 price tag, but as it's a special shade, I think it's worth it!
Have you tried any of her colours?  Here's a link to the rest

I know many of you are excited for the SuperBowl today.  But, did you know 95% of people are watching today for the commercials?  I thought I would share my favourite SuperBowl commercial of all time.  Please enjoy these amazing superstars in a Pepsi ad from 2004:
