MareReviews: Divergent

Jer and I managed to sneak away to the movies this weekend and saw the new movie Divergent.  To be totally honest, I read the book by Veronica Roth and wasn't too thrilled with it.  I thought it was fine, but I wasn't interested in running out to buy the other two in the trilogy.  In hindsight, I think I read it too soon after the Hunger Games series and they have a similar feel to them.
After seeing the movie, I totally want to read the other two books! (Anyone want to lend them to me?)  This is one of the most original, gripping and thrilling flicks I've seen in a long time. I cried multiple times and also realized I was holding my breath a few times too!  Jer actually leaned over and asked me if I was ok at one point!  I've only seen Shailene Woodley in The Descendants, but she was phenomenal as the lead in this.
I think the Divergent books are considered Teen Fiction, but don't let that fool you.  This movie is entertaining for adults too!

How I Ate Healthy Last Week

Last week we were away from home for about ten days. Usually I use being away from home or on vacation as an excuse to eat whatever I want and indulge.
But, this time was different.
When we were away for Christmas I ate whatever I wanted, as much as I felt like and didn't exercise at all.  Getting back into my workout and healthy eating routine was rough. In fact, I got sick and missed a couple weeks of my workout.  Both Jer and I felt sluggish and gross for weeks. I made sure not to repeat that on this trip.
**Instead of opting for chips, fast food and licorice, I planned ahead and made road trip snacks.  We had fresh juice, water, bananas, apples and kale chips.
**I also opted to bring along my juicer.  We were driving, so it was not a problem to pack along the machine and I was happy to have it.  It was nice to have fresh juice to keep me going and fill me up, as well as ensure I was getting the nutrients necessary to continue with My Way to a Healthy Life
**Also, I've been having 100 oz of water a day and found this easy to stick to.  I am going to write an entire blog post on this soon, so stay tuned!
**I have joined a free online fitness and health group which provided daily motivation and commitment.  I highly recommend you contact Alyssa to join in.
**When travelling I find it virtually impossible to avoid eating out.  We hit Wendy's multiple times.  Before leaving I asked Alyssa for advice on what to eat out and she suggested getting a grilled chicken burger, no bun, with bottled water, green salad with Light Ranch dressing and a baked potato with just scallions.  I added some of the Light Ranch to the potato as well.  Extremely filling.  I also chose to have Booster Juice a couple times with their freshly made juices and tried a protein shake from there too.  Definitely not the best as there is frozen yogurt in it, but filled me up and felt better than having greasy food.  Which, to  be honest, we did get McDonald's once when there were no other options.  Ew. This might be TMI, but my body rejected it for about a day and a half.
Lesson learned.
**I am trying to eat more protein, so I tried a smoothie at Starbucks with protein in it.  Delicious and filling!  It was a much better choice than a scone and mocha.
**One day we had to eat in a food court and I managed to find some greek yogurt with quinoa (amazing by the way) and a fresh salad.
I still can't believe how much healthy food I was able to eat.  Sometimes it took a bit more work to make smart choices but I feel better for it:)
How do you eat healthy when away from home?

Early Morning Advice

I have been getting up at 4am for work since 2007.  Ooof.  Just writing that sounds tiring!  But, I realized that my early morning wake-ups have made me a bit of an expert on the topic.  I get asked all the time, "how do you ever get out the door and look half decent doing it?".  Well, here are some of my tips!

What to Eat Before & After a Workout

Continuing on My Way to a Healthy Life, I am still loving my 30 Minute Hit workout routine.  But, I wanted some tips and education on what I should be eating before an after I work out.  So, I asked the owner of my 30 Minute Hit, Trina, to share some wisdom.  I am not an expert, so let's hear from someone who is!

A Few Tips for Building Lean Muscle Mass:

By continuing to build lean muscle at the gym, firing up your metabolic burn during cardio and fueling up with clean meals, you can keep your metabolism at its possible highest no matter what age you are.

Protein is the foundation!  Most of your protein should come from whole food sources but it's also a good idea to supplement with protein shakes daily.  No more than 30 minutes after training, consume 20-30 grams of fast-digesting protein.  This is where whey-based powders that can easily be mixed with water reign supreme.  Also eat 50-60 grams of fast-digesting carbs such as fat free cookies, muffins, fruit, Gatorade or another carb drink.  The combo almost immediately reverses muscle breakdown from training and can help with hormone balance.

If ever there was a perfect, post workout muscle building food, bananas would be it.  They have protein, fibre and carbs, as well as potassium.  Potassium is an important electrolyte which helps with muscle contraction. After working out your muscles are tired and weak, but potassium gets your muscles firing again, a big boost to recovery.

Eating a large meal an hour or two before you work out is ideal.  For example: have a chicken breast and baked sweet potato about two hours before hitting the gym.  This should help you go longer and harder.  In the morning try steel cut oats with berries or super foods like chia seeds, goji berries etc.

Keep hydrated to keep your cortisol levels balanced, thus staving off cravings.  It's also great to have a high protein breakfast within an hour of waking up and avoiding more than a 3-4 hour gap between meals and snacks.  Eating frequent, small meals with protein, complex carbs and good fats can help balance your blood sugar.

Lastly, good sleep actually helps you lose weight by influencing the hormones that control your appetite and increase your metabolism.

These are all such great tips! Thanks Trina:)
I asked you on Facebook what you like to eat before and after a work out:

Nail of the Day

This Nail of the Day is another Sally Hansen Salon Manicure polish.  The last one I tried was a hit and I love this one as well! You can get it at the drug store or WalMart, but I have also seen them at Dollarama.  This shade is Cafe au Lait and it was a beauty to wear.  For a week it barely chipped.  Also, when a nude polish does chip, it is hardly noticeable.  The brush is thick, making application quick and easy.  Also, even though this is a pale shade, it was easily opaque in two coats.  (Look for a video soon on my three favourite nude polishes!)

Fashion Faux Pas?

This photo cracks me up.  I took this selfie the other morning thinking I was just going to post an innocent OOTD because I was feeling cute.  Then I looked closer and realized there are no less than THREE fashion faux pas in this outfit!  But somehow, I think it still works! I am such a rule breaker ;) Let me break down my rebellion:

#1: Don't pair black with navy.
I love this pairing!  My Aerosole boots are black and I am wearing Le Cheap C'est Chic navy tights. I think the navy is a fun neutral but adds a little interest instead of boring black tights.

#2: Don't mix metals.
Mix away ladies! I am wearing a gold chain necklace from Forever 21, rose gold arrow ring that was a gift from a friend and the dress, also from Le Cheap C'est Chic, has silver metal detailing. I think this works! I love to mix metals and play with accessories. I think these work because they are all streamlined, nothing is too chunky or overpowering.  They all compliment each other nicely.

#3:  Don't mix patterns.
Why not? I think this skull scarf from Winners adds a nice pop of colour to this neutral outfit.  Again, the key is to keep the patterns complimentary and not clashing.  If the stripes were huge and the scarf was loud, it wouldn't work.

Clearly I ignore the fashion experts! I think this works and looks cute. I felt great wearing this outfit and isn't that what matters most?

MareReviews: Kacey Musgraves

Let me begin this review with an apology:  I am so sorry that I haven't recommended this albums sooner!  I should have been sharing the love and telling you to listen to Kacey Musgraves months ago!
I guess that was a spoiler;)
Kacey Musgraves is my kind of singer.  She's an honest and witty storyteller.  I swear some of the songs speak to me so strongly it's like she read my mind!  Same Trailer Different Park is Musgraves' first album with a major label, but she is no stranger to the music industry, having already written for heavyweights like Miranda Lambert, Martina McBride and Gretchen Wilson.
Something that is fabulous about country music is that it often tells a story and Musgraves is one of the best.  I continue to come back to this album time and time again.  Follow Your Arrow is probably my favourite, with its message of being yourself and following your heart.  I also love Silver Lining and Blowin' Smoke.  This Grammy award winning artist is opening for Lady Antebellum and Katy Perry on tour this summer.  I am sure Same Trailer Different Park is just the beginning of a long, successful career.

Beauty Blogger Tag

I usually do tags like this on YouTube, but thought it would be fun to mix it up and do one on here! I present to you, the Beauty Blogger Tag, which I originally found from Beauty Broadcast:

1. Is your hair naturally curly or straight?
Straight like a prairie road.  I have never been able to keep a curl in  my hair, until I discovered this curling wand
2. Do you dye it yourself or go to a salon?
I have never dyed my hair.
3. Do you wear the same style everyday, or do you change it?
I am guessing this means my hair...I switch it up. Usually I will wear it down a couple days and then up or under a toque on third day hair:)
4. Do you do your own mani/pedi or go to a salon?
I love to do my own nails and actually find it pretty relaxing.
5. How often do you change your nail polish?
I do my pedicure probably every two weeks and my manicure twice a week.
6. Do you polish your toes in the winter or just the summer?
Year-round. I really don't like my nails, both toes and fingers, without polish.
7. How long does it take for you to put on makeup?
Probably five-ten minutes on an average day, but I could take much longer if I was getting ready for a night out or had more time:)
8. What do you do first? Face or eyes?
Face. I have tried to leave my face until my eyes are down in case of fall out, but I just really prefer to start with a blank, prepared canvas.
9. Do you collect makeup or just buy what you need when you need it?
A little of both. I wouldn't consider myself a collector, but I do buy items they spark my interest or sucker me in.  I haven't bought any makeup this year except what I needed.  Nail polish is another story...
10. How often do you wear false eyelashes?
Never. I have failed miserably in the past to apply them and just gotten discouraged.  I should try again because I love the look of them.
11. Do you do a full face of makeup everyday?
Heck no! I usually have a fresh face on a Sunday, letting my skin breathe.  I haven't used foundation in more than two years. Just BB cream and minimal makeup.
12. Do you wear makeup when you're home alone or with family?
If I am going to be home all day, nope! I am getting better about not wearing anything on my face.
  13. Will you leave the house without makeup?
Yes. Vlogmas was a break-through for me and I took the plunge going on camera without makeup and also being out in public without makeup.  It's quite liberating! I've never worn makeup to the gym or beach...but always for other outings.
14. How many high-end products do you have?
My Chanel nail polishes are a thing of beauty.  I love NARS blush in Orgasm and eyeshadow for my brows in Blonde.  MAC blushes are also a fave of mine in Peaches, Well Dressed and Margin to name a few.  MAC mineralized skin finish in Soft and Gentle has been my highlight for a solid year now. Also am obsessed with my MAC lipsticks...faves being Vegas Volt, Freckletone and Fashion City and my gloss in Viva Glam 1.  Ok...maybe I should stop now...oh wait! Love me some Urban Decay eyeshadow.
  15. Do you plan your OOTD every night or decide when you're getting dressed?
At night absolutely. I am up at 4am and if my clothes are laid out for me, sweat pants will win. Every singe time.
16. How often do you change your handbag?
I have two on the go...a diaper bag and a purse for work.  I usually switch up my purse maybe three times a year.
17. What time do you wake up and go to sleep?
Sunday through Thursday I am in bed at 8pm because Monday through Friday I am up at 4am.  Weekends I stay up til probably 11 and sleep until 7.
18. How often or when do you workout?
I love 30 Minute Hit and attempt to go three times a week.  Also I love at least once a week to get outside and go for a walk or run with T in the stroller.  Working inside I find that I just crave fresh air.
  19. Left handed or right handed?
20. How tall are you?
5 foot 8
21. Do you speak any foreign languages?
22. How many pets do you have?
23. How often are you on Blogger?
5 times a day maybe.
24. Do you read comments posted on blogs?
Yes! I wish there was a way for Blogger to notify readers who comment on my blog when I reply like YouTube.
25. Do you keep a list of products to try as you see other posts?
26. How did you come up with your blog name?
I use RedheadMare on all my social media, but wanted something a little warmer for my blog and thought Mare's Place was a good fit.  It's a place where I share things on all kinds of topics. A safe place.
27. What kind of camera do you use for your photographs?
My Samsung Galaxy S3 is what I use for all my Instagram nicer photos on my website and video is the Canon S3.
28. How often do you clean your house?
I am always tidying and I try to clean a little each day so it's not a full day job.  Jer and I only get weekends together so we try not to waste the time doing chores:)
29. What's your favorite color?
Red. Duh ;)
30. Do you swear?
Only when I'm not on the air. Or with my mum or mother in law;)
31. What are you doing with the rest of your day?
Hanging out with the fam. My fave:)

MareReviews: Gravity

We always try to see as many Oscar nominated movies before the awards are handed out, but I wasn't overly motivated to see Gravity.  From the previews it didn't look like something I would really enjoy and in fact, I thought it looked cheesy.
Jeremy was very excited to see Sandra Bullock and George Clooney in this flick so we watched it Saturday night, the day before the Oscars.
Wowzers.  This movie blew any expectations out of the water (or maybe I should say atmosphere) and kept me on the edge of the couch the entire time.  It's the story of a woman and man who are astronauts and their space mission goes horribly wrong.  There's no subtle, slow lead up to the action.  The movie opens and they are already floating around in space.  I kept waiting for a reprieve, a flashback, a moment to breathe.  There is none of that.  You are instantly hooked and terrified.  I don't think I took a breath until the credits rolled!  We watched Gravity from the comfort of our home and I can't even imagine seeing it on the big screen or in 3D!  I actually think it would have made me nauseous.
Sandra Bullock's performance is unlike anything we've seen her in.  She's vulnerable, yet strong. Gravity made me hold my breath for the entire 90 minutes.  It won 7 Academy Awards and is definitely worth checking out.

My Chat with Shane Koyczan

I have been wanting to interview Shane Koyczan for about four years and this week it finally happened! I had to edit the audio for the radio, but I wanted to share a longer version on here.  If you are looking for a little inspiration and comfort, look no further.
If you aren't familiar with Shane, he performs around the world, spreading love and joy through his poetry.  He's created incredible pieces like To This Day (more than 12 million hits on YouTube), Instructions for a Bad Day (one of my faves), been featured on Ted Talks and also performed at the Vancouver 2010 Opening Ceremonies.
I am honoured to have had the opportunity to speak with him.

What a Difference a Scarf Makes

The easiest way to dress up an outfit, look pulled together and add a pop of colour is a scarf.
It's the simplest accessory and is perfect for us busy women!
Let me show you:
Here I am wearing a nude shirt.  It's bland and boring.
But, add in this infinity scarf and I feel like my face looks less pasty white and warmer.  I like how the colours blend and change subtly with the heart detailing.  It screams spring and exudes love without me having to say a word.
This one is darker, but I love how it brings out my deep blue eyes.  It reminds me of a Burberry plaid, classic but super easy to throw on.
Fun fact: this navy number isn't an infinity scarf.  It's tied at the ends to create a loop.  This makes it much easier to keep the style in place, without it sliding around and looking messy.
I hope this is simple and helpful!
Thanks to Le Cheap C'est Chic for the idea and for the scarves:)

Nail of the Day

Yet another new brand for me!  I know what you are thinking, "how can this nail polish obsessed girl not have tried every single kind of polish?".  :)  I had heard great reviews of this entire line of polish and then my friend Loni surprised me with this!  This Nail of the Day is the CoverGirl Outlast Stay Brilliant polish in Golden Opportunity.  Would you believe this is only two coats?  It is so rare to find a glitter that is opaque in two coats.  It was so pretty and easy to apply.  I am impressed with the formulation and might just have to try a non-glitter shade.  Another bonus is that it was a dream to take off.  Usually glitter rips my nails a part and this was not like that at all! I also enjoy a polish like this as it doesn't show the chips and is a very forgiving shade, great for a beginner.

Review: Oscars Fashion

Last night was my Superbowl.  The 86th Academy Awards.  I watched all three and half hours of it and while there were some lulls and mishaps (John Travolta...what?), I loved it!  Some of the highlights for me were the acceptance speeches by Jared Leto, Matthew McConaughey and Lupita Nyong'o.  Powerful, well thought out words to remember.
But, to the fashion.
Two words:
Nailed it.
While some people consider black to be boring and safe, these three women are anything but that. Julia Roberts' was classic yet trendy and beautiful.  Anne looked bangin' in this sleek dress with the metallic detailing. Anna Kendrick joked that she didn't get the "sparkles" memo, but I love the unique lines on her gown.
I think it's risky to choose red when walking the red carpet.  But Jennifer Lawrence's orange toned red gown is on point. I love the simple hair and the unique necklace that went down her back. The arm detailing on Kate Hudson's dress is gorgeous, as is the symmetrical design.  If ever there was an occasion to wear this dress, I would own Pink's red sparkly number.  It was meant to match Dorothy's ruby slippers in the Wizard of Oz. Yes. Please.
I don't usually mention men in my fashion review posts, but last night, they brought their A Game.  I was just loving all the coloured tuxes!  Kevin Spacey in navy, Michael Strahan in maroon and Matthew McConaughey in while.  Nailed it.  I love seeing these guys taking a bit of a fashion risk and straying from the classic black.
Who were your favourites last night?

It's the Little Things

You might think this is the silliest blog post I've written.  But I believe in finding joy in the little things and this simple organization makes me smile.  One of my New Years Resolutions is to be a better house keeper.  I have been slowly organizing, purging, cleaning and working toward that goal.

Let me know if you'd like to see another blog post or video on what I've been doing.

Kitchen drawers have always been a black hole in my home.  The amount of junk we fit in these compartments is ridiculous. I've already organized the "junk" drawer and blogged it.  I wanted to make better use of these drawers and thought I would share how it turned out.
This is one drawer.  As you see we have both adult and children cutlery as well as various kitchen tools.  It might look like a mess, but it's organized chaos!
This pink basket came in a set of four from the Dollar Store for a couple bucks.  I also featured them in my Cheap Bathroom Storage video.  I like that it adds some colour to the drawer and thought it was fitting for T's cutlery.
This is a recycled 3 Wick Candle from Bath and Body Works.  See how I clean them out here.  I have it in the drawer with the lid on, holding small items like an egg timer, cherry pitter and pasta measure.  Small bits that were scattered around.  Now I know where things are and with them more accessible I find I actually use them.  Novel, I know!
This white container, along with the cutlery divider were from WalMart, very inexpensive.  In this basket I have the items I use the most.  Can opener, vegetable peeler, garlic press etc.  The black knife sharpener is from Dollarama, was $3 and actually works!
The other drawer is a simple storage space.  Long, large kitchen tools that are in this white container (also from WalMart) in order of usage.  The ones I don't need often like a cake knife, tongs, rolling pin are at the bottom with wooden spoons easy to grab on top.  I had NO idea I had two set of measuring cups.  They are now easily accessible along the side with measuring spoons and my tiny grater for things like ginger.
This jar is a recycled Mason Jar Candle also from BBW.  It now holds our corn on the cob handles.

I hope this post helps you with some ideas on how to make your drawers a little less cluttered.  I find with things organized I use my kitchen utensils more and am happy to be in the kitchen.
