De-Cluttering Our Home: Part 4

Thanks so much for the great feedback on my first three De-Cluttering Our Home posts. If you haven't read them, you can do so here.
Today I am taking you into the hot mess that is our pantry.  This is where we keep all our food, besides the fridge, as well as some odds and ends as you will see. I like to clean it out and definitely don't do it enough! Here is an idea of what I was dealing with, heading into this de-cluttering project:

As you can see, it was overwhelming!  There was food everywhere, in no order.  First things first, I took care of our recycling which was getting out of hand:
Then I completely emptied the pantry and washed all the shelves.
I laid everything out on our counters and went through each item one at a time.
You can also see my laptop sitting here. I definitely recommend a good playlist while you are doing any kind of housework.  It seems to make the process more fun and go by quicker. On this day I was rocking out to the musical stylings of Adele!
I got rid of anything that was expired.  I couldn't believe how many things had been sitting in that pantry for WAY too long!  I also pulled all the Christmas goodies left over like chocolates etc. In the basket on the top shelf I had kitchen items that I never use but didn't want to get rid of. I was ruthless and pulled so many things for the thrift store. Who needs FOUR sets of steak knives?!? Especially in a house that no longer eats red meat!
When putting things back into the pantry, I was much more mindful of what I access daily. For example, the spices had originally been way in the back in an awkward corner. Now as you can see in the above photo, they are directly in front of the door, much more accessible.  This may seem minor, but it makes daily cooking much easier.
I also lined up similar products like crackers all together. This way I can see at a quick glance if we are running out when making the grocery list.  Again, simple yet effective.  I put more items in the glass canisters as well.  Having less items in the pantry in a better order makes it much easier to know what we have and grab them quickly.  Do you have any pantry organizing tips? I'd love to hear them!

Oscars: Best Dressed

Did you catch the Oscars last night? Whose dress did you love? I was texting with a good friend of mine who also loves the Academy Awards and she said there were ones she thought were pretty but that nothing was really stunning. I felt the same.  I love the spectacle of the Oscars and the wonder of the dresses.  There weren't any show stoppers last night but there were definitely some stunning dresses. I also loved all the subtle makeup.  Nude lips and stand-out eyes with beautiful earrings were definitely a trend last night.  Here are my favourites:

Mare's Music Monday - The Grammys

This year's Grammy broadcast did not disappoint! If you are new here, award shows are my favourite things on tv and the Grammys is my absolute top, my Superbowl! I will get to my favourite moments in a second, but I have to share with you my thoughts on this year's best dressed.  First on my list? Miranda Lambert:
From the red carpet's sleek black look to the leather ensemble she wore while performing to the fun print she changed into and wore while accepting her award for Best Country Album...she was on point!
Then, I absolutely loved these three looks:
Gwen Stefani seems to defy aging. I love her pantsuit, especially the texture and design on the top. I also love that she went with a beautiful nude lip and simple hair.  Iggy Azalea blue was a breath of fresh air in a sea of black.  I love the cut outs, the simple makeup, the braids. Gorgeous!  Another woman I thought just looking leggy and lovely was Taylor Swift.  The dress fits the occasion but also shows her true style being classy, colourful but showing those beautiful gams! Again simple makeup but a show stopping look.
As for the show itself, some of my favourite performances were Hozier with Annie Lennox (chills), Katy Perry (the room went silent) and the Rihanna/Kanye/Paul McCartney collab.
What were your favourites?

De-Cluttering Our Home: Part 3

Welcome to the third installment in my series of De-Cluttering Our Home! You can see Part One here and Part Two here.
Today I am bravely showing how terrible my bathroom cabinet was.  This is under my bathroom sink where I can easily hide my ridiculous stash of beauty and bath supplies. As you can see from the photo, it was out of control!
To tidy this space, I pulled everything out and went through each item individually.  There were products that had expired which I easily tossed.  Other products I knew I would never use and so, if they were sealed or unused, I put those in a different bag.  I ended up throwing out almost half a garbage bag!  The other bag of products included makeup, hair stuff, toiletry bags etc.  I brought this bag to work and laid all the items out on my desk and then invited my colleagues to take what they wanted.  It all went within minutes!  The women were thrilled as though it was a beauty Christmas morning!  It felt great to get rid of the products and to see how happy everyone was.  I also had some sealed skin care more suitable for teens.  My niece took a couple and then I dropped the rest off at our Food Bank.
Here's how the cabinet looks now:
There is definitely still a lot of product, but it's much more organized and accessible. I was also pleasantly surprised to see how many of my favourites were tucked in there, back-ups ready to go.  In the right hand basket I have a large, clear toiletry bag with samples and extras I know I will use.  On top of that is the bags I use regularly when I am away.  In the left basket I have my hair tools and some extra products I reach for more regularly.  The nail polish remover is accessible as I reach for it weekly.  The five perfumes are my Britney Spears collection, waiting as back-ups.
I recommend going through your own beauty products.  You may have unopened items you will never use that would be great for gifts!

Wise Word Wednesday

This week's Wise Word Wednesday quote is something I've seen many times but it's never really resonated with me until recently.  I always thought that going out of one's comfort zone was trying something crazy like skydiving!  But in the last few months I have been doing a couple things completely out of my comfort zone.  I didn't even realize they were out of my level of comfort until I started doing it.

If you've been following me for a while you will know that our family has been going through an incredible ordeal for the past almost four years.  Yet, we've never talked about it.  I don't just mean we haven't spoken publicly.  I mean, we hadn't even told our family and closest friends how tough things have been.  We've always just put our heads down and weathered the storm as best we could.  We never wanted to be a bother or a burden to the people in our lives, knowing everyone is busy with their own level of storms.

Then, things got to a level of crisis and we were encouraged to reach out, open up and let people in.

Every single person we have spoken with has been completely shocked to realize how much weight we've been bearing and immediately want to help, in any way they can.  No one had any idea how things have been.

The two things out of my comfort zone (unknowingly) have been:
1 - Telling people how rough things are
2 - Asking for help

I am sharing this with you today because I want you to know that if you are going through a tough time, tell someone.  Ask for help.  Do NOT think you are a bother or an annoyance.  If someone in your life makes you feel this way, that speaks volumes about their character, not yours.  Ask someone else.  There will always be someone willing to help, willing to listen.  I was honestly completely blindsided, to the point of tears (many times), at people's generousity. If asking for help and talking to someone is out of your comfort zone, don't worry.

Me too.
