A Day to Celebrate

Today is a momentous one in our house.

Today is Thomas' first full day of Kindergarten! Yes, it is January but today is the first day Thomas will be spending the full length at school.

Whew.  It's one to celebrate!

Our Thomas is on the Autism Spectrum and also has profound hearing loss. He's been going to Kindergarten since the beginning of September and little by little we've been increasing the length of his days.  This has ensured success and progression. Today, he goes all day!

Three days a week Thomas attends his Autism therapy sessions for two hours in the morning and then joins his class at 11am. He then stays until the end of the school day. So, he's technically learning for the full day, just in two very different settings.  (His Autism therapy is very intense with an average of 20 goals hit every two hour session. He works hard!)

Then the other two days a week he's slowly increased from three hours to now, today, a full day.

We are beaming.

I've been asked by many Mareathoners to share more about our Autism journey and our day-to-day life.  Thomas and his expanding team have worked incredibly hard to get to this day. He consistently shows us there is no limit for him.  And we are right there with him.

Jer's Music Monday

(My husband Jeremy and I want to see Miranda Lambert in concert. In fact, it's on our bucket list. Speaking of lists, she's on his. You know, that list. Like on Friends... So, that being said, I asked him to review her latest album. - oxox Mare)

My favourite country singer is Miranda Lambert, so needless to say, I asked Santa to bring me her new album. Her previous five albums had produced so much memorable music, yet I didn't have high expectations for The Weight of These Wings. Why? It's a double album. In my opinion, double albums never work. There always ends being WAY to much filler and they leave me wondering why the artist didn't just make an awesome, one disc album instead of a double with filler. Trim off the fat and give me 10-12 great tracks instead.

Before she even starts singing on the opening track, Runnin' Just in Case, I knew she had some great songs on the way, the question was how many? I have good news! All 12 tracks on Disc 1 are fantastic! I don't skip a single one, which is saying something.

I can't say the same about Disc 2. It isn't bad, but I wouldn't call it memorable. Going forward I'll probably just listen to Disc 1 and pretend it isn't a double album.

I have one other complaint.  It's missing that signature, fast tempo "bad girl" song that seems to be on every Miranda album. Where's Kerosene, Gunpowder & Lead, Something Bad or Fastest Girl in Town?

I understand I've complained a fair bit, but she once again delivers the goods! Excuse me while I go listen to Disc 1 of The Weight of These Wings again!

Hug It Out

My name is Mare and I am a hugger.
Let's just get that out of the way.

I saw this quote on Facebook last week and it really resonated with me. So, I tried it! I swear my hugs with Thomas have been three times as long lately. Or we hold hands longer. The other day he took Jeremy's arm and put it around his little shoulders.

It warms my heart.

We used to struggle every hour to even get Thomas to look us in the eye. I mean that. Every. Hour. Multiple times an hour.  He would avoid us at all costs.  Once his Autism took over, at about age two, he turned inward and barely even knew we existed.  He was not affectionate. He showed little emotion. He would push us away, physically and emotionally. It chipped away at my heart.

Fast forward and he's turning six this Spring. He's affectionate, searching for eye contact and seeking out hugs to squeeze, hands to hold and snuggles to be had. Oh, and he is great at the high-five!

This has taken WORK. Struggle. Tears. Therapy (both Autism therapy for T and counselling for Jeremy and me).  Set backs. For a long time, years, it felt like two steps forward five steps back over and over.

Now he runs over with arms wide open for a hug.  He shows us he's happy to see us and my heart melts every time. Daily I am proud of his eye contact.

Back to the quote. Being more in the moment and hugging it out for as long as he wants has been beautiful.  I'm even getting more hugs at unexpected times.

Next time your child (or anyone really) hugs you or snuggles in, don't be the one to break free. It's good for the soul and it could be just what they (or you) need.

Bathroom Makeover on a Budget

I renovated my bathroom for under $100! It's cheap and easy and hides so much stuff. Watch how I made my bathroom go from cluttered to clear. My bathroom organization is easy. I give a tour of my new bathroom in this video and show you how easy it us to make things simple and tidy.

Books to Take Control of Your Life

2017 is here and I wanted to share some fabulous books to kick off the year. I've been reading self-help or self-improvement books steadily for the past year and I've seen a shift in my life. I feel more in control of my life, emotions, destiny and overall status. Letting go and letting the universe have my back has been a huge shift and it's something that's mentioned a lot in these books. I hope you read some of these or listen to the audio book and that they bring you peace as they have to me.
Here is a link to the full list of books under the video on my YouTube Channel.

Why I Journal

In 2016 I filled three and a half journals.  In fact, I started the year in such a state of turmoil that I completed one book in January alone.
As I reflected on last year and looked ahead to make goals for 2017, I laid my journals out in front of me.  Without even reading the words, I can tell what mood I was in on any given day, just by looking at my writing.
I am often asked how to journal or why I do it. As we embark on a fresh year I wanted to share this video again, outlining by tips for this therapeutic exercise. I encourage you to try journaling. I never would have made the positive changes in my life last year without this process.
